He does seem to have a purpose, and his has so much stress. I would've broke down and cried too if I was in his shoes.
Spoiler (highlight to view) It seems like his "sister" is his most important person, and he wants to be independent so he can protect her. This might be just because I like Kyoko and I'm reading into that one page from that chapter too much.
