I have to agree with reid1 that there aren't that many good animes out there. The animation/graphics part might be much better these days, but plot/characterization are sadly lacking.

Anyway... I'll second Serei No Moribito. And if you like it, you HAVE to check Kemono no Souja Erin. I recently watched it and thought it was a great anime. (The use of recaps was the only drawback for me, but still very annoying)

If you like action / seinen you could check the recent Jormungand, very similar to Black Lagoon (although weaker IMHO).

You should also check Kurozuka. Great if you like action/romance/supernatural. The plot hooked me till the end. Definitely seinen though.

Just noticed I forgot THE anime (and of course manga it's based on), if you like plot/story driven with mind games and a lot of mystery/suspense : Monster. A classic.

Thanks for the suggestions! Well, Black Lagoon was ruined for me thanks to annoying attitude of male lead. And of course, I have read Monster....A great series indeed.

I am still open for recommendations especially for Mystery/Crime thriller, space operas, historical (similar to Kaiketsu Zorro) and fantasy.

You're welcomed. I'm glad you liked them.

I edited my first post with Mugen no Ryvius (mystery/space opera), Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku (fantasy/sci-fi) and Boogiepop Phantom (mystery/crime thiller), so check them out if you've the time.

For Kaiketsu Zorro, I forgot that it's a Japanese-Italian co-production (Toho and Mondo TV). The Italian Mondo TV participated in a lot of historical anime like that, which probably the most famous (at least here in Italy) is Robin Hood no Daibouken. They all aired when I was a kid in the 90's, so I can't say much about them, but I believe Robin Hood could be similar to Kaiketsu Zorro.
Another good anime I remember having watched as a kid (and I'd like to give it a rewatch) was one set during the Lancaster/York war (War of the two Roses). I was pretty sure it was called "La freccia nera" (The Black Arrow) in Italian, but I really can find no info of it on the web, beside some topics in Italian of people asking for info like me and getting no useful response, lol. I'll open a thread here and ask to see if someone remember it (in the case I made you curious too lol http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=40306). Edit: I believe I mixed it up with Robin Hood and they're actually the same show. smile

I would skip Last Exile's sequel series. It's a complete failure. Especially when you compare it to the first one. Which the show itself does and just makes you hate it more. no Do however watch the original. It's one of the very best.

Am I the only person who liked or even watched Speed Grapher? It's a great show.
Maoyuu Mao Yuusha - If you liked Spice and Wolf
Galaxy Express 999 - If you want a space opera, this one's the granddaddy of them. Oh, but it's over 100 episodes.
Eureka Seven
Lagrange The Flower of Rinne
Katanagatari - Cheerio!
Patlabor
Tower of Druaga
Kekkaishi - the always overlooked shonen series. It's worth looking into.
Shingu
SDF Macross - the one that started it all. How does frontier get mentioned and not this.
Shiki
Ghost Hunt - for reasons beyond me, this one is hit and miss with people. I like it. eyes
Ghost Hound
Bodacious Space Pirates - trust me, it's better than the title suggests.
Tiger and Bunny
Cross Game - is a baseball show considered slice of life? It's got elements of it.
Revolutionary Girl Utena - What penguindrum is a pale imitation of.
Birdy the Mighty Decode

though it's 3x24 episodes Shakugan no Shana is quite nice, but you'd have to accept tsundere and somehow manage the first 2 seasons (first one old -> bad art, second involves some slice of life), the third one is really good plot-wise and has very good animation.

Accel World the main character is kinda... different, but overall better anime than sword art online, same author.

about the current season, you could wait for Suisei no Gargantia and Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge to finish. You could check the manga (latter one) first.

It's scary that I have seen about 80% of those and I definitely wouldn't consider myself to be really big into anime. I think I need to go outside for awhile. smile

Has anyone mentioned Eden of the East yet?

Anime facts:
Title: Eden of the East ("Higashi no Eden")
Director: Kamiyama Kenji ("Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex")
Length: 11 episodes + 2 films (Eden of the East: The King of Eden and Eden of the East: Paradise Lost)
Trailer: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi803642905/

Great series with a lot of interwoven plot lines and references (e.g. to Shakespeare). Starts out with a disposition similar to the Bourne Trilogy but soon goes off into a different direction. The anime skilfully bounces between action, thriller, subtle romance and comedy elements for most of the time; it could also be interpreted as some sort of mind game if you wanted to. Yet, it manages to scratch the surface of recent trends (like terrorism, social networking, NEET culture and disorientation of youth, society vs. individual person etc.). You could say the plot carries a socio-critical note.
I liked the anime series more than its sequels for the silver screen, though.

I'm too lazy to read through all the post already but I have to strongly recommend gintama--
It is gag but ~45 episodes in the arcs begin and are filled with action and great moments-
You really don't need to watch the beginning episodes (only the first 3ish to understand characters) but can skip to the amazing arcs filled with awesome lines

I think I saw that the OP said they were actually going to watch Guilty Crown. Don't do it. You'll never get those hours of your life back that could have been spent watching something...anything else.

It's starts with great potential and then just falls off the cliff. Actually, it straps on a rocket pack and shoots all way down the cliff until forcefully disintegrating upon impact. Maybe I'm exaggerating, maybe not.

Nobody mentioned Angel Beats or Air? What a waste... Key makes awesome stuff.
Both have romance but not as the main plot.

Angel Beats info (http://myanimelist.net/anime/6547/Angel_Beats!)

Ok these are what i selected from my MASTERPIECE folder, i am 99% sure that you will find AT LEAST one of them to be a masterpiece too.
3 from the dark side and 3 from the light (though not shallow by far):

Monster (miiiind gaaamessssss)
Paranoia Agent (classy mindfuck)
Ergo Proxy (now this one i didnt watch for a long time, but if you catch it in the right mood- OH MAAAN)

Samurai Champloo (what can i say.. summer is comming!!)
The Twelve Kingdoms(someone already recommended this one and i totally agree)
Trigun (classique my friend, hopefully you wont hate the main, since he's real cool)

There are many anime that can rate as really good and exellent, but only gems of an anime world can be called masterpieces. And now that i'm finished talking like a salesperson, check them out man, they are a total rave!!~: D

Ive watched a lot of anime (mostly dubbed, too lazy to read) and read a lot of manga. Here are a handful I would recommed for you.

**Note: i been on an old school anime kick lately so some of these may be a bit dated.

Primary Suggestions (should like based on your preferences)
Hyouka (Kinda slice of life, but high on MYSTERY)
Pumpkin Scissors
D. Gray-man
The Familiar of Zero
Hyper Police (rather episodic)
You're Under Arrest (rather episodic)
Corpse Princess
Flame of Recca
Yu Yu Hkusho
Murder Princess (short. Only 6 episodes, but good)
Sands of Destruction
Tears to Tiara
Rurouni Kenshin
Gokudo (if you like Slayers)
Buso Renkin
Full Metal Panic
Magic Knight Rayearth (its CLAMP)

May Likes (fit some of your likes but have a few of your turn offs)
Cat Planet Cuties (a bit etchi, but everything else you asked for is there)
Clannad (Mostly slice of life, but great story. After Story may even be my all-time number 1)
Bubblegum Crisis (a little echi but very good)
Burn Up W/Exceed (ignore the jiggle counter and its quite good. Skip Scramble tho)

My Faves (more of your turn offs but i love them too much not to mention)
K-ON! (super funny, cutesy slice of life)

Co-sign (already mentioned. Worth mentioning again)
Slayers
Cowboy Beebop
Scrapped Princess
Bodacious Space Pirates (in my all-time top 10)
Shakugan no Shana
Ghost Hunt (high on the mystery)
Maoyuu Mao Yuusha
Kekkaishi
Birdy the Mighty Decode

Don't ignore the old school stuff. Its from a time where the good stuff was really good and the bad stuff was crap. Better storytelling and at times better action sequences than much of the new stuff.
