I just finished marathoning it....the forest chase scene was where it became almost unbearable for me but I persevered. Now we have talking gorillas and WWF fights. Its just horrible....so horrible.

I think if the author had just visited the basement sooner, and then led the characters to explore outside of the walls the series would have been better, but instead he decided to introduce internal intrigue. What do you think?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks something like that. When I read the first 3 volumes i was very excited for this manga, but then plot started taking a weird direction and after the "female titan arc" I dropped it since the successive arc was kinda boring, I wanted some answers about the titans, not the stories of random character never seen before taht die in the span of 2 chapters.

I agree that the pacing could have been better (faster). However, the author did get in a good bit of character development during those chapters. It's not like Eren and Annie (and even Armin) aren't important characters. Annie is clearly linked to whatever is in the basement and most likely Eren's father. The main story line revolves around what lies in the basement and the significance of the organization that Annie (and Eren's father?) is/are part of.

Absolutely nowhere.
There hasn't been a chapter where I thought that what happened could have been left out. They're all tiny pieces of the puzzle that is the origin/secret of the titans.
The pacing could be a bit better...but I think the fault lies with the magazine that it gets published in rather than the author. It would be alright if it were a weekly series, IMO.

I think you just made it sound bad :/
I take it you just plainly dislike the development; the forest mission was completely fine with me. It's too soon to say too much for the current arc, since he is obviously escalating the development by quite a bit.

After posting in this topic I actually caught up with last chapters, and I still think there is something wrong with this manga. Or at least something I deal badly with. Now
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It turns out other 2 members of the squad are actually titans, wtf!? Those two had been background characthers until now, I doubt anyone could have expected it, it seems like he decided this just out of fucking nowhere. And they start by asking Eren to just go with them nicely. WTF.

I'm actually fairly sure,or at least hopeful, that, as someone said, all of this will make sense when we get the full picture. But right now I really find it hard to follow the story.
Maybe if it was a weekly manga instead of monthly it would help but not very much.

Edit: Just to be clear, I want to like this manga, the story is very interesting, I just have some difficulty in wrapping my head around it.

From my understanding, Ryner and Bertholdt (iirc) are Titans that were in a deep cover op just like Annie was. In fact, they were the two titans who breached the walls at the beginning of the story.

It seems that they've been in cover for so long that they've forgotten about their mission - they've forgotten that they're titans.

Ryner was beginning to crack, and when Bertholdt suggested that they "return to their home village", he finally crumbled and went for a desperate move. They wanted to remain under cover, so they invited Eren "nicely". It was only when things didn't go as planned did they go full titan mode.

It was even foreshadowed that Ryner was in cahoots with the titans during his encounter with the female deviant type titan, so its not really out of nowhere.

The female titan arc was one of the best arcs because it actually answered why humanity has been tremendously failing for the past 100 years. They have spies among themselves, not even just one faction (Annie/Bertholdt/Ryner) but several (Ymir). The spies aren't even the only problem because I'm sure the rich corrupt class in the inner city knows about everything that's going on.

Yes, the expedition on a whole kinda failed but it's that kinda manga where despair is one of its qualities.

Everyone being titans was foreshadowed since chapter 1. People were already speculating the Armored Titan looked suspiciously like Ryner. This explanation was done before the Ryner/Bertholdt reveal (and after the Annie reveal). Some of the arguments are ehh but that last one he accurately predicted. The mangaka loves to drop a lot of hints, if you use your brain you can piece them together.

I can totally understand the feelings of you guys . I'm also one of those people who kept wondering when they would reach the basement. The plot thickening with titans having spies in the cities just made it everything more exciting. the talking ape titan brought a wtf moment to me. All in all i think the storyline is going good but like so many others i just want the story to move faster there're so many pending revelations.

Since the chapter 42 came out I had been wondering if the translation had not been ehm .... made a bit strange.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I mean two guys who were beaten up by titans ... suddenly proclaiming out of a blue, in an open field, right next to titan slayers, that they are titans, and a bit later a guy whose name is "Fubar"... srly?!

So considering this topic, does it really mean that the story really goes like that?

Op, you should reread the manga. eyes eyes I don't think anyone whose marathoned this manga in a day or two can fully understand it. When I reread snk I noticed details that I never noticed before. As someone here mentioned already, the 'random' revealings weren't really random.

Rereading the manga, for me, helped me to understand why things happened the way they did (the 'forest chase scene' you are talking about actually revealed much about why 'humanity has been tremendously failing for the past 100 years' as Dr. Love put it). Also, since rereading the manga will give you a better understanding of it, you can form plausible theories about what will happen in future chapters. For example, I don't think this 'talking gorilla' is just some random asspull. Most likely, the hairy titan will have some importance in the future.

The hairy titan could even be Erin's father.....

Use your brain or drop it, thats the only thing you can do with this manga, someone who maybe started Reading the manga because the anime and "marathoned" it didnt have enought time to really catch the deep of the plot and chars development. Like all mangas this one have ups and downs and i for once feel thats one of its good features. remember this is a work of fiction we cant judge it by our real life standards.

As someone said, if this manga really have problems is because the story doesnt go well with a monthly format, and in that the mangaka is failing bad, even if each chapter have enough info, action, clifthangers and everything to make ya wait another month it...doesnt seem enough!! Oh god this makes me remember the times of the band of the hawks and the berserk releases every 6 months bigrazz

The pacing of this story is very very slow. Most of the training stuff could have been left on the cutting room floor. Along with the events out in the wild. There's a lot of exposition and monologues that just aren't needed. It's almost as he's writing it with television in mind. What I don't get is the impression that the writer is making it up as he goes along. These events are plotted out, but it's all about how he goes about getting from point A to point B. He knows where he wants to go but it's the in between that he's making up as he goes along to get to where he wants to go.

I'm still hooked though and I want to see where he takes the story.
