I know this thread is pretty ancient, but Natsume Yuujinchou is technically shoujo, and it's a masterpiece. Its very name speaks of friends and the protagonist has the most not-a-sob-story tragic past. It has a kind of magic about it and it's my comfort food.

Edit: Wait, I missed that. The protagonist is no longer being abused, but there's several flashbacks and it still affects him, as it has shaped his personality and behaviour. Does that count? Anyway, it should be compulsory reading regardless bigrazz

An Innocent Sin... perhaps embarrassed it's a lil on the explicit side... and the abuse is covered later on in the chapters sad made me sad for him

I'm not sure if you're just looking for manga or anime, but I've been looking for something similar and really recommend reading SHELTER by wufargia on Webtoons.

The main character Ruka is being physically and emotionally abused by his uncle and his best friend Pom gives him this virtual reality game to meet up and help him escape from all the pain. I love it so much! The main characters are so cute :3 The art at the beginning might not be so good but keep going and it'll be worth it! 😁
