This week's poll about death is from our member miskatsura. It's an odd poll. The assumption here is that in the series, the main character (or an important main character) is going to die sometime in the series. At what point in the series would you like this death to occur? (In terms of resurrecting the character, I'll leave that up to you). For the option "Already dead when the series starts", it could be that the main character is the narrator who has already died and is telling a story about the past. Or it could be that the character is some kind of ghost or undead being. I guess it depends on the story you want to tell, but I'll leave that up to you when voting on this poll!

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: What if your favorite series was already complete (in original language) but the scanlations (for your preferred language) were too slow for you to keep up?
Choices:
Resort to reading / looking at the raws - votes: 2763 (24.2%)
Ask for spoilers / summaries for people who have read the raws - votes: 878 (7.7%)
Patiently wait for each release and read right away - votes: 5097 (44.6%)
I'll give up and read the entire thing once the scanlation is finished - votes: 2001 (17.5%)
There's always other stuff to read, so I'll just forget about this one - votes: 700 (6.1%)
There were 11439 total votes.
The poll ended: May 18th 2013

Patience is a virtue. But a surprising amount of you would hunt down some raws! I'm quite surprised by the amount of people that chose that option!

There's a "I don't know/don't care" choice missing... I want whatever works best.

I prefer the MC to die at the end. When knowing MC is gonna die at the end, it brings a lot of drama and tension in every chapter as what will happen, how tragic his death would be, etc.... Of course those dramas can be created even when MC die at start or later on, but I prefer it in the end.

There should be a "Whenever is best" option (though then everyone would pick this I guess).

There was a study which showed that many people prefer to know the ending of a story before they start (so they read the last few pages or prefer stories where the ending is revealed at the start and it then goes back). Apparently this is because the suspense created by not knowing the ending can cause some people to be unable to fully enjoy the story as they are too concerned about knowing what happened. Because of this, I suspect many people would like the MC to die at the start and then the story to be a recap of how he died maybe.

The next big group are people like me, who like the suspense and mystery, so we would prefer the MC to die at the end. Though really, it does depend on the story.

I really hate when MCs just don't die, or even get badly injured. despite being close to death most of the time. (Like almost every action shounen going). Even if it isn't the MC, some of the minor characters can die a little more frequently.

The funny thing is my second choice would have been hunting down any raws.

Hmm. I remember one of my favourite tropes used to be that hte main character dies suddenly at the beginninf of the series, perhaps the first chapter, and then comes back in some way (resurrected/resuscitated via crazy science/doing something int he afterlife/etc).
I do like the whole 'I will die at the end' thing, like in Wheel of Time. Or it could be that we're shown a flash-forward of his death or something tragic at the start and the lead-up is then shown (like in Zetman or the anime of GunGrave [I havne't palyed the game])
It really depends on how it's done and what the story's about. I can think of excellent series' that match each of the options of the poll.

...Except maybe the first option.

If mc really has to die then I'd prefer it to be at the end. If he/she can be resurrected then I dont really care. But I also dont want him/her to die at all...

If a character was already dead before the series started, he could not be classified as main character.
An exception to that would be if the complete series was told as a flashback. ending when it reaches the present, but I haven't seen that yet in a manga.

Assuming the MC will be brought back to life, I'd rather him die early...or midway through at most.

I don't like main characters dying at all so I would prefer that not to happen.

I went ahead and chose already dead when the series starts. At least that way I know what I'm getting into. Plus undead main characters are pretty cool.

I'd like him/her to die early, in the first few chapters. I don't want him resurrected. It should such plotted that, the character to die would be shown in a really high light, and then suddenly killed after a first few chapters. I think it opens multiple potential paths in the plot, which the author can then take and flourish the story.

I like this poll! Unpredictable for us to see the most choices. Actually, for me, I really doesn't like the main character died, but, if I have to choose then I choose "midway through the series". So, we can see the mc died not too fast or not too late and disappointed. Sorry for the bad language biggrin

It's a weird poll. I honestly don't know what option I should choose. To me it doesn't matter when the character dies, as long as the manga is good.
