Ok let's make him/her already dead, then MC'll be reborn at the end to fight with final boss.
Oh and the whole serie might be about what MC did beforehand.
Wow that's sound weird

This is a tough one indeed.... I find that there really is no clear cut answer since it heavily relies on the plot of the story.... The best conclusion I could come up with is "the end" based solely on weighing in how many deaths I feel actually added to the quality of the series.... Simply put, most deaths near the end were in series that I tended to like more.... I don't believe that to be a clear cut benefit for story planning, but it just seems to have worked out more in what I have read....

yes, Solanin for example.

If he dies within the first few chapters or is dead from the start he will definately be ressurected (else he wouldn't be MC right?).
I haven't seen many good ressurection manga and if he dies midway there often is a strong break in the series, so I'd prefer the tragedy ending where he dies at the end.

I like mine extra cheesy with a side of cheese. In other words, right at the end. A main character cannot be dead before the series starts. That wouldn't be a main character. Unless it was a ghost or the setting is another plane of existence (heaven, demon world, etc.), but they don't seem dead since they still exist. I guess it could work, but that narrows the field of categories of the manga this poll could stand for. I just can't think of a manga where the MC dies either before the series begins or soon after it starts where they'd still be considered the MC, aside from when they live on as a ghost, get resurrected or something. Again, that makes the first half of this poll a pretty narrow field whereas the second half of the choices could exist in nearly any type of manga. Damn, it's hard to articulate this w/out losing everyone and typing forever... none

If they're gonna die, probably want it right at the end.
Midway would be interesting too.

Nope.
The character can come back to life. Or it could be about his reincarnation or his afterlife.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Billy Bat
turned out to have a false protagonist. Although, considering what happened in that mangaka's iconic work and the fact this series isn't finished, he may turned out to have survived. He'd be pretty darn old though. Like 60s or 70s, i think.

Any link to the study? Although it's hard to believe that people like to jump to the end to find out what happens before starting, I've seen quite a few people admit it as well. Another reason is that they want to see whether the ending is good or not. If the ending's not what they want, then they just won't read it.

Yip, Gantz

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Though he was later brought back to life, it still sucked though that most of the m.cs died in this

If main character has to be dead, then I prefer him/her to be the ghost from the very start (dead long before first chapter of the series)

I kind of wish there was an option for Don't Care, or when it best progresses the plot. It doesn't make sense to me to have a set preference, when my preference is if a plot device, i.e. character death, is well written then timing

+1 to this.
But, really, this poll question is really good to make you stop and consider what's the best answer. To whoever submit this question, you're awesome!

After the first few chapters so we are taken by surprise and there're also 99% chances the character is coming back at some point, since being dead isn't as permanent on fiction as it might be in rl anyway.
