It was, according to news back in the 90s. According to newer research, more than 8.5 hours of sleep cause some serious damage to the organism. Around 7 hours /for most people/ (6 for a smaller percentage of the population) is the amount of sleep you need to function properly.
Personally, I feel like I've been beat up if I've slept more than 7 hours.
