Hello to you all, this is my first post.

I was wondering what manga would be considered as pretty clever or witty. I'm always interested in stories that put a twist on things or make some genuinely excellent comedy.

An example I'd have would be Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. I find the wordplay and the cultural observations to be unexpectedly astute and clever as well as hilarious. I also hear Azumanga Daioh would fit the bill.

So, recommendations?

Havent read either of those, but Mx0 comes to mind for me. Main protagonist gets viewed as being more powerful than he really is and it is about him trying to fit in while not letting anyone know his secret (Didn't want to spoil anything so I summarized).

Pretty good action/comedy with a hint of romance if you're into that.

I can highly recommend cromartie

It's comedy is very simple but very clever. You'll probably love it or hate it, but give it a try.

? I don't see how Mx0 is at all the type of comedy or wittiness that he's asking for.

Welcome to the NHK! is probably a really good bet if you want something like Zetsubou. It deals with a fictional hikikomori and his crazy views on society that impede his recovery.

Some parts of Hayate the Combat Butler could qualify, but it's mostly otaku humor rather than the witty stuff (although Santa does refuse to bring presents to poor kids in the first chapter.)

Minami-ke is another Slice of Life type comedy like Zetsubou and Azumanga, and I suppose Lucky Star is as well, although I haven't enjoyed the manga version very much.

I aimed for the clever part, I did say I hadn't read the manga he listed, but felt Mx0 fit the bill of a comedy with cleverness.

Moyashimon comes to mind...though only one chapter has been scanslated so you're better off watching the anime to get a feel for it...

You could also try Genshiken as it takes a look at otaku culture and the rest have already been mentioned by Crenshinibon

Thanks for the recommendations so far, I'll be sure to check them out. Out of those posted, I know I've read Mx0 and Cromartie High school, both excellent candidates.

To clear things up a bit, I'm not necessarily looking for comedy specifically. Something like Death Note or Kurosagi would fit the bill perfectly, although I do find that the comedic genre does have the most potential to be clever since it doesn't need hold itself seriously.

Keep e'm coming!

If it doesn't have to be funny, 20th Century Boys and Monster are both excellent psychological manga that offer a lot of commentary on human nature. I think they far surpass Death Note in terms of complexity and cleverness.

Death Note is very clever.
xxxholic is surprisingly deep and is clever in it's own way.
Spiral is a mystery/detective series that I always found very clever, though it doesn't have the same mature look as things like death note

not sure what ur taste are but these are the most witty(or unique whatever ^_^) i can think of right now. both are horror/comedy but the second one is kinda romance i think. i warn you now dont take the horror genre lightly. but anyway i'll see if i can remember anymore
