I'm looking for an action manga where the main characters find themselves in a desperate battle. The enemy is ridiculously strong and so the main group can survive one of the characters sacrifice themselves and "go down in a blaze of glory".

Zero No Tsukaima (novel) has one part that was really well done. The anime actually butchered it a bit to conform to the season format.

superior thought it actually happens in the sequel.

Hmm... I have yet to finish the series but Samurai Deeper Kyo sounds like what you are looking for. The story is pretty epic and the battles involve a lot of sacrifice, wounds, and ridiculously awesome (translate: unrealistic) techniques.
Death Note--it wasn't on your list...but I doubt that you haven't seen the anime.
