I think the point of the Borderline Hentai tag is that the series in question contains some very graphic scenes but the author does not intend to get the reader aroused like Hentai does. It's not just about the nudity but about the author's motive. The way I perceived the tag it serves as a warning for all those who are bothered by graphic scenes.

I think it's borderline because unlike hentai borderline hentai will (I think most of the time) will have some sort of plot, where as hentai is just straight up sex, sex, sex. Borderline, as explicit as it is, usually isn't as full blown as straight up hentai (I've read a lot where they don't even actually show the penis. If you see penis I think it's hentai haha). It's definitely more graphic than smut manga, but not as graphic as hentai.

Basically I think there's a fine line between borderline H and actual hentai, but the line does exist.

I 100% agree that Hentai is straight up sex whenever the author can randomly throw it in there. I agree too that showing the male body parts makes the age rating shoot up.

What about manga like Umibe no Onnanoko by ASANO Inio? To me it feels like a social study and not like porn at all, it is way too desolate, cold and lonely to arouse me. What about titles like these?

I think that most sexual things that happen in anime/manga are intended to arouse you, if they werent than what purpose would they serve? Sexual things in general are not meant to just be there, they are meant to arouse the audience. If someone calls something "Borederline" Its is on the brink of being something, so by saying "Borderline" hentai, do they mean borderline arousal? that makes no sense in my opinion. its like saying "Woah there, this is borderline hentai, it is ABOUT to arouse you but not quite there" Get me?

But i do agree with it serving as a warning for those who are disturbed by the graphic images

It's called Borderline H because it contains explicit sex, but that is not the main focus of such manga, unlike Hentai which is solely about the sex scenes.

Obviously, it has nothing to do with "almost arousing" someone. The "borderline" part comes about because there are some similarities in the content, in that both clearly depict sex.

I didn't mean it like that with "arousing someone". What I wanted to convey is that the purpose of porn or Hentai is different from series which contain sex scenes as part of the plot. The former are for fapping, the latter are not. Of course, you can't classify the degree of arousal.

They should come up with a new name for it then, haha. Borderline Hentai dosent really suit it, it should be a new category.

This is random, but I find it interesting that it's so much more acceptable to show female parts than male parts.

I read a lot of smut, borderline, and ecchi so I go through a lot in the genres. I really like the Borderline Hentai tag as it tends to tell me that while this series has hentai elements it also has a plot and characters. When I see just Hentai in the tag I assume it's nothing but porn and it tends to be. I have yet to read a hentai with an intelligent plot.

And jump in the harder Senein series. I have read a lot of them that show everything, but aren't really there to arouse you. More so just to freak you out and be disturbing. Does that count as hentai when it isn't coming across as overly sexual. Sex doesn't always have to be sexual. I think people forget that. And the borderline hentai tag is a good warning that the series still has explicit images even though it may not be trying to turn you on.

(Discussions like this fascinate me since I have no libido thus don't really "get" sex. But I really enjoy taking maturely and unbiased about it.)

Is the difference between a porn movie and a movie with high sexual content. Even if there is nudity or/and (lots of) sex scenes it will still be and adult movie but not a porn movie.

You've said it! This is exacty what I meant. I think there was a similar discussion about the "Porn with Plot" tag. People just don't seem to get that "Borderline H" does not equal "Porn with Plot", even though they might be overlapping in some cases.

I haven't read any of these "borderline hentai" at all, but if I may chime in anyway...

It seems quite strange to assign a weird genre to a manga like that. For example, if a summer block-buster movie had a hardcore sex scene it wouldn't be "borderline porn", it would be an action movie with explicit content.

Porn and the english meaning of hentai is content specifically with the main purpose to sexually excite.
That's why softcore porn is still porn even though the content is "lighter", the purpose of the content is the primary decider.

That's why all these borderline cases is not hentai one way or the other; "borderline hentai" is not a genre or a real label.
They're just manga with explicit (sexual) content.
