Just read the initial chapter released by Mangastream and it had very much the same vibe as Negima!, minus the stripped girls, but it really made me go "wtf?" quite a few times.

Hmm.. Spoilers about Negima! and the first chapter of this one, so I guess I'll hide it just in case. Go read the first chapter and then come back, yeah.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Admittedly I can't remember the timelines given in the last chapters of Negima! all that well (and I can't check right now since I'm still at work), but just having "current" time set as 10 years after revealing magic to the public on Earth, yet having a grave for Negi and referring to him as grandfather seem wayyyy off to me.

We don't even know if this is supposed to be the "round" in which Asuna was asleep for the whole time or the one where the sleepyhead was taken back in time right to the moment she left in the first place.

It's been a while since a chapter of manga has left me this confuzzled. Hell, I'm even debating about the Konoe gravestones. Does this mean that Negi actually had a kid with Konoka, or is that just another fakeout?

Man, the Negi-shippers (minus this implied pairing) AND Konoka x Setsuna shippers must be preparing for war just about now...

Edit:
@imercenary

Nope, I'm not overthinking the number of timelines. I know only the timelines 2 and 3 are *really* relevant here, but the potential differences between those two are kind of a big deal.

A few noteworthy things (I'm sure there are plenty more):
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
1) The space elevator(s) completed before magic was revealed? Negima left me assuming that use of magic was quite integral in their construction process. People would question about material strength and whatnot. It seems strange that the public revelation of magic would happen so late, far after even the start of the Mars terraforming project.

There is also that tidbit given in the Yue-chapter of ending 3 epilogue. It happens only 7 years after the graduation and whatnot, but it says there that the public revelation of magic is only two years away and the space elevator is still in quite an early state.

This makes the timelines seem really wonky, since Negi died in 2065 in ending 2. You'd think he'd make at least that far in ending 3, especially since they managed to wipe Lifemaker and free up Nagi in that timeline as well.

2) Negi apparently marrying with Konoka. Negi's message to Asuna in the time capsule was recorded on 2023 and made no mention of such (He would definitely make a mention of this to Asuna, considering how close both of them were to Asuna), yet the ending 3 epilogue stated that Konoka healed the petrified villagers in 2017 and married soon after. You would think that the healing would happen around the same time on both timelines. This is kinda weird.

3) Where the hell is Chachamaru?!? Of all the girls in Negima!, she was the most straight up devoted to Negi. You'd think she would be around to look after the orphaned grandson along with Eva.

4) The gravestone of Negi was on celebrity graveyard in the ending 2, but here it is with two Konoes with the one without a given name implied to be that of Konoka. The text on the gravestone (if I'm reading it right, it's kinda fuzzy) "here lies a great scientist of biological and medical science" seems to refer to her.

Edit 3:

Whatever your opinion on the issues might be, AquarianDemocrat's comment below pokes a bunch of deserved holes in the narrative.

I'm happy Akamatsu finally gets to do the shonen manga he always wanted.

Well from the last chapters, the orbital elevator wasn't completed til 2028. And Negi doesn't die til 2065.

So this all should be taking place after those.

But, it was all in the no-Asuna (sleeping) timeline. So this yet another alternate timeline with Asuna in it could have led everything down a different path.

You're over-thinking things.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Theres pretty much only 3 timelines (4 if you count Shao winning) that matter.

1. Shao's Ending: Shao's original timeline (which is implied to be a variant of timelines 2 and 3)
2. Normal Ending: The timeline where Asuna sleeps through everything
3. True Ending: The timeline where Asuna sleeps through everything but gets sent back in time by Shao and future Eva
4. Bad Ending: Negi and co are trapped in Eva's castle by Shao during the festival arc (obviously not relevant since everyone is dead and its only been 10 years since the secret of magic was revealed)

Only timelines 1-3 matter and they're all variants of one another.

Has Ken Akamatsu gone completely insane? I'm worried about his mental health after reading this chapter.

Negima is dead (pun not intended.) I understand he had big plans for the series, and it wasn't his fault it ended the way it did, but the last couple chapters barely qualified as outlines, they weren't even story boards, let alone a coherent plot. He needs to stop beating a dead horse and quit whatever vendetta he's pursuing against his old editor and go write something new.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
This chapter is complete nonsense, I suppose we can start with the idea that Konoha and Negi (or Konoha and any man, considering it's not even remotely implied she was even bi, she was a straight up lesbian) had a child is completely logically inconsistent with everything he wrote in the original series. And I'm not just talking about Konoha and Setsuna, but about Konoha's relationship with Negi. Konoha is actually pretty much the one kid in his class that didn't flirt with him at some point, and the only time I can recall she did (the one-chapter marriage meeting arc early on), it was clearly shown at the end of the chapter she was trying to get Asuna on better terms with him through her meddling. Even if we accept she's bi, she never showed any interest in Negi! I think fans could accept, at least on an intellectual level, literally any other girl getting with him (except maybe the one who had the daddy complex and Setsuna.)

I guess it's OK though considering none of the future in this chapter is even remotely logically consistent with the original series (whether or not it's conceivably possible to work out some inane twisty-turvy plot that keeps everything consistent.) He's basically completely retroactively rewriting Negima from chapter one, told from the point of view of a bunch of generic characters no one cares about. Not just the plot of the original series, but the characters. This series is not even treating the original series like canon. That makes me angry because I know a lot of people liked Negima (I thought it was OK, for my part) and a lot of his old fans loyally stuck with Ken Akamatsu as he dipped his toes into the Action-Adventure waters, and I feel like this chapter spits on the entire cast of Negima and is a huge disservice to all of its fans. He should have started a new series, not retroactively tried to rewrite Negima.

If Ken Akamatsu wants to write a Shounen action, more power to him! He could write a great Shounen action series, with great characters and action! He should go do that instead of beating a dead horse by trying to reopen and rewrite Negima. This is a confused mess. What a huge waste of time.

He only called out mother, father, and grandfather. No mention of a grandmother. So the 2 gravestones in front are probably his parents, not Konoka.

And it's not definitive Konoka married Negi. Could just be their children got together.

Also, timeline 3 is really up in the air. It could wind up very different from 2 due to Asuna being around, and Chao with her time hopping dimension thing. It's said she visits often, so alternate timelines can be created all over the place, maybe even accelerating events with all that future knowledge.

As for Chachamaru, the first couple pages seem to imply Eva might have ditched her along the way. We know she went into hiding from that bounty. So Chachamaru may be out there, just not knowing where Eva went.

Yes. This. Hopefully it becomes a long runner.

Ah, that makes sense. For a moment there I thought Akamatsu had gone back on his character development, let's say. I'm leaving it at that because I don't want to bother using the spolier tags.

Uh no. If all you're going to say is claim "alternative timelines", then no one is right cause Ken Akamatsu could simply say "fuck all, this is a brand new series; same names, same appearances, same behavior, same powers, but different people therefore you're all wrong."

True, it is actually classified as a Spin-off, but it's not all that far off from a sequel either way. But yes, Spin-off it is.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The issue with the Konoe thing is up in the air since, as mentioned above, the name could have been introduced into the mix in the generation after Negi, meaning the new MC's parents.

Still doesn't change the weird combination of the magic reveal being only 10 years in the past and having the space elevator complete (and Negi apparently dead and having progeny two generations down), given how things went in the w/o Asuna timeline and what was said and shown in the epilogue of the w/ Asuna timeline.

Given how well Akamatsu held the things together in Negima, this kind of inaccuracy feels very sloppy and off-putting.

@legowaffles

Heh, I actually entertained your crack-theory as well. Not likely considering Eva's flashback, but an entertaining though to be sure. And yes, the "merely assumed dead" is possible and quite pausible since the theme is quite a cliche in these kind of stories.

@aagcnet

You say that like "pulling a Kubo" would be a good thing? I have a massive love/hate relationship with Bleach and the hate is due to Kubo's inability of keeping his shit straight and consistent. Standard, muggle-logic has no place in shounen in general, but consistency does.

Honestly I am of the opinion that
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Negi isn't actually dead, so much as missing or believed to be dead. It wouldn't be the first time someone faked their own death for whatever reason. His grave could be empty.

Also, even if Word of God says otherwise, I refuse to believe he is truly dead at this time.

Call me a stubborn fan. More importantly, I'm interested in seeing where things go from here.

Oh, crack theory:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Touta isn't Negi's grandson, but rather, his reincarnation. Extremely unlikely. More like, impossible. I could see it happening though

He will just pull a Kubo or Kishimoto and everything will be fine after that... stop worrying... It feels weird when people try to get logic out of a work of fiction....

if this does happen and he have an active role in the manga... then u can qualify it as sequel.
