I was just curious how many MU users could and couldn't drive. I know this topic exists, but I wanted to approach the subject in a different way and to create a poll, I hope it's okay.

Additional questions:
If you have a licence: How old do you have to be to be able to drive in your country? How did you learn how to drive (driving school, parents)?
If you don't want a licence: Why not?

I don't have a driving licence and I don't want one. To be honest, I'm a bit terrified of driving, I'm afraid I would hit someone. I've used public transport all my life (my parents don't have a car either) and I'm not really used to being in a car.

Yes, I have a driver's licence. In Finland, you can get one when you turn 18. I got mine via driving school, though I actually didn't get it 'till I was 21. I just didn't feel the need to get it before then, but right now, it is quite essential due to my hobbies and work.

Yeah I have my drivers license. I've had it for 3-4 years now. I passed when I was 18. You can start learning to drive when you're 17.
I learnt through driving school. Standard really.

Only problem is, the insurance for new drivers is fucking ridiculous, so I didn't manage to get myself onto the family car. I haven't driven since I passed. The main reason I haven't driven though is I don't need to drive at the moment. I use my drivers license as my ID to buy alcohol and get into clubs laugh

If I ever do manage to get into a car again, I'll probably do a refresh session with my old driving instructor. It has been a while and I've probably forgotten a few things baha.

Yes, I've had my license since I was 15...could have gotten it at 14, but it didn't work out to take Driver's Training at school until the summer after I turned 15.

Where I lived then, there was NO public transportation AT ALL so if you wanted to go anywhere, it had to be by car (plus we lived 4-5 miles out of town).

Where I live now we're in town and there's some public transportation, but I still end up driving about three days per week because we need to go some places that public transportation doesn't go (and there's no public transportation at all on the weekends).

I would love to not need a car, but it would be really difficult to get by without one. (I'm in the US.)

I have my driver's license. Got my learner's permit at 15 and then my license at 16.
Took driver's education in high school, along with the needed on the road experience require for the class.

Honestly I hate driving, and the only reason I decide to get one is "just in case something happens". Like if I needed to drive someone to the hospital for some reason. Now I keep my driver's license because I need to drive places in order to get things done. Still hate driving though ....

Here in the US if you under 18 you have your learner's permit for one year, and able to get a license once you turn 16. If you are 18 they technically give you your permit, and then your license (assuming you past your tests).
Sidenote- In my opinion you should get your driver's license at 16 in the US instead of waiting. Once you move out on your own car insurance gets slightly cheaper with more experience under your belt.

Same as @Kitty18dnsz, I got my learner's permit (permission to start learning to drive) at 15 and my license at 16. We didn't have driver's ed in high school though. We had to pay to attend a private driving school. You mostly learn from your parents, and then go to the driving school just because its required. I'm in the US, and the laws vary state by state, and change frequently. Like now in my state, you have to be 16 before you can get your learner's permit.

I would always find it strange when I met people who don't have a license and have never driven before. I live in the suburbs of a city, and you have to have a car to go anywhere. And even for people who live in the city, they still prefer to have a car since public transportation isn't the most reliable. And occasionally they'll want to go outside of the city.

Got my first driving license when I was 17, in the Philippines. But I moved to the US and got my license here when I was 19. Driving here is so much easier. Too easy, at least in my state... which leads to problems, like speeding... >__>

I had my license suspended last year due to too many tickets/points against my driving record. NOT FUN. I hate driving now. I wouldn't drive if I didn't have to, however, public transportation here sucks.

Got my drivers' license at 17. my dad was always taking care of us. i wanted to take some things off his plate, so i decided to get the license.

now that i live on my own, it'd be possible but dangerous for someone like me to get around without a car. i have no street smarts. laugh i don't blend in at all, can't talk my way out of anything, there are little to no walkways in high traffic areas and bridges, shootings are a norm, and i work late nights meaning long walks alone at night with all kinds of dark, hidden places along the way.

........sooo not going the way of the horror film.

and on the "rather not drive" side, yea--me, too. in high school, i got into an interstate pile-up (not my fault) where 75% of the car went completely bye-bye. i got reeeeeeal lucky.

still, considering my suave people skills and the local violent crime rate, i think i'd rather take my chances in the car.

Nope. I rely on public transport (or walking for under 10km distances) and it's enough for me. Also the price for getting a licence is quite a investment... I think they go for 3000€+ nowadays. That's quite a price for someone like me who can't even own a car (I live in city center; no parking space) and therefore opportunities to drive would be very limited.

But I wish I had gotten a licence for moped when I was 15 - not that I'd like to ever drive a moped, but back then a simple theory test would have been enough for getting one and that'd be a great replacement for an ID card (I don't want to carry a passport with me...). Now I need to replace my (expensive) ID card every five years... and since I live abroad, I also need to make a trip back to my home country for that. Really inconvenient!

Got my license at 18, which is the minimum age for drivers license for cars here in Norway. The roads here are in some of the worst conditions in the whole bloody world, not kidding, the goverment often reduces the speed limits from 80kph to 60-70kph because the roads are so crappy dead. To make up for the crappy roads we are also one of the strictest countries for getting your license, which is why you can use a Norwegian license basically anywhere biggrin.

I live 30+km from any stores or urban settlements so I need my license to get back and forth because of a near non-existent public transport here, but I'm still speeding a lot none. It's not good that I'm speeding, but it's so fun and helps me get to my destination faster...

Heeey, try Polish ones ^.^=
But well.. if it took us 3 or 4 years to reorganize one simple crossing (Marynarska, Warsaw) you can't expect too much..

I got my license when I was 19, you can't learn to drive earlier than 3 months before 18th birthday, and you have to be 18 to take the exam (for which in Warsaw you have to wait over 1 month).
I passed .. the 6th time.. So it took me quite some time.
I live in the city, but in one of the outer quarters (but not suburbs), so you have the public transport and the parking places. I use the car a few times a week, mostly to visit my grandma or my friends who live in the suburbs (it takes 15minutes by car an 1.5h by public transport). Using it to go to the center is not a good idea.

Nothing I saw when driving through poland is as bad as the roads in this area.

Got mine a couple of weeks after turning 18, which is the minimum age here.
