That is true, the people I know who are into manga and anime are only into reading and watching aswell, I would like to collect stuff aswell but so far all I have found is action figures and stuff, no manga or anything.
The cartoons on air today are weird as shit, I kinda feel sad for the kids these days. When I was a kid we had some pretty awesome shows out there, so I guess that should promote anime too. What i would love is to be able to subscribe to some magazines like Shonen Jump.
Another big issue is the fact that people tend to look down on anime and manga in general, when I tell people that I love manga and anime, they have weird reactions at times, lol if only they knew how big an otaku I am.

You took the words right out of my mouth. these cartoons are absolutely horrible. It's either Doraemon or Chota Bheem all day long. Or that really weird Oggy and the Cockroaches. When I was young I used to watch some pretty awesome cartoons/anime. Samurai Jack, Tom & Jerry, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, Dexter's Laboratory, and so many more! Anime like Pokemon, Beyblade, Digimon, Naruto, Shin-chan, Dragon Ball were some of my favourites as well. Though everyone referred to them as cartoons. No one knew what anime was back then.

People are still pretty oblivious now. Whenever I tell anyone I am watching an anime, they are like - "say what?" Then I am obligated to explain what anime is.

There are several but I don't think they would be considered otakus by most otakus.

By my definition, desi otakus are people who read/watch manga/anime. Collecting stuff here at a reasonable price is pretty much impossible. Less demand, lesser suppliers and import material tends to make them expensive.

lol Doraemon is an anime though, but yeah I know what you mean. They only cartoon the on disney worth watching is Phineas & Ferb, in my opinion. Though it's been ages since I saw cartoons, even keeping up with anime is proving to be impossible, with all that is to do and read and watch lol.

Samurai Jack is crap. Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory are the start of degenerate cartoons. They went more and more down hill quality wise since then. Shin-chan is also crap drawing wise but given its age you can let it pass but story wise its not bad. Its pretty funny.

By definition otaku is a person who has an obsessive interest in anime or manga. He or she really takes it up a notch which would be considered weird by most people by following all of that specific writer's works, all of that anime directed by that specific director, all the manga illustrated by that specific illustrator etc etc. Desi otaku just means he or she is person with these obsessive interests is from the Indian Subcontinent. I suspect Bangalore might have actual otakus.

Everyone has their own opinion. I was pretty young when I used to watch those. So they were awesome in my opinion, especially Dexter's Laboratory. And Shin-chan's art didn't bother me in the least. Though I admit it became more boring after a few years. Shin-chan being disciplined is not at all adorable.

I regress. I have changed the definition of otaku in my dictionary biggrin It makes me feel better since I can no longer be considered an otaku cool

I know that Doraemon is an anime. But, it tends to get too repetitive. Nobita's voice gets on my nerves. The kids in my neighbourhood watch it all day long at very high volumes. So believe me, I'd know dead Been ages since I watched cartoons too. Probably around 4 years back. The cartoons started to degrade after that.

I am a pakistani. Didn't know what anime was but was still watching digimon and shaman king on jetix when I was 12. After that came pokemon and dragon ball z...in urdu on CN. Discovered it was anime at this point.
I discovered naruto and bleach after that and when I was upto date on their latest episodes I discovered their manga and realized how most anime is based on manga.
From there on I started watching anime and reading manga like a madman.
Don't really know a lot of people who watch as much anime as me mostly just people who watch the big 3.

Hi.

I live in South India and I have just one person to talk to about anime and manga. Most people go 'huh?' when I tell them I love anime and manga so I just say I like Japanese cartoons.

When I was little, I loved Naruto, Beyblade, Digimon, InuYasha and Yu Yu Hakusho. Then I watched Kiniro no Corda and became a big fan of shoujo manga, which I still am.

I find Chota Bheem and other new cartoons here absolutely boring and I spend most of my time watching anime. One of my favorite anime is Kuroko no Basuke.

I found Samurai Jack and dexter's lab to be awesome too, never got into Shin-chan though.

I feel your pain lol, those hindi dubbed voices in doraemon are annoying as hell, they make me want to tear my hair out.

I 've been into anime since dragon ball, but the first time I really started showing signs of being an otaku I guess, was the night before my Biology O Levels final, I went on a Bleach spree and was up till 6:30 am watching bleach, I think I went through 30 episodes that day.

That's a lot, and especially before your finals too eek I am surprised you could remember much of what happened in the series after that.. I frequently find myself going through humongous manga series or novels in less than a day or two, unable to put them down. Later I find myself wondering what the chain of events exactly were dead

Lol, my life story laugh I am also from south india, living in the west though. You will be hard pressed to find people there of my age who will willingly read anything other than their text books down south biggrin

I always end up doing this now. Whenever I find a manga, anime, novel or tv series I like, I pull marathons till I finish them, and end up feeling sad when they finish lol.

lol Its hard finding people who like to read in any area these days, but I am proud to say that I have converted a couple of my friends into fairly avid readers.

I don't really think I fall in to the otaku category but I've been an anime/manga fan since forever. It started with watching shows like Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha, Digimon and other stuff that was on when I was a kid. I haven't actually seen much anime recently though perhaps because of uni and stuff. The last one I watched was Gunbuster I think. Even if people I know do watch anime they generally just follow the mainstream stuff to fit in with the crowd. People especially don't get why I like Gundam lol. I currently live in Pakistan btw.

I dont think manga and anime are so popular in Pakistan that people would watch them to be able to fit in with the crowd, but thats based on my own experience. I liked Gundam, but never really got too much into it, the various Gundams just seemed too similar to me. I havent been able to watch much anime because to uni and stuff aswell, but I do tend to keep up with manga, more often then not.

Wow, never thought I'd see a thread like this here. Lol.

Wouldn't call myself an otaku, don't even read much manga anymore, sometimes scanlate only. I live in Pakistan and I sincerely hope I don't know you...

Started reading manga like 6 years ago when I was living in Canada. Picked up a random one from the library, liked it, explored genres and yadda yadda yadda. Mentioned reading them once or twice to some cousin maybe, even got one or two to try them, but they never liked it. Found one girl in uni here who loves manga and anime and such so much that even I found it weird.

Definitely second you on the weird reaction thing. They look at me as if I sprouted another head.

Hey, Pakistani living in America. I've been into anime as a kid, started with Gundam, Dragon Ball, etc. but as I've grown older I grew out of anime and only watch when one of my closer friends recommends some to me (she is Arabian). I really only read manga nowadays so I'm not a full blown out otaku, just a little one. wink

I've been on this website for many years but am not an active part of the community, I mostly just come here to read recommendation threads, keep track of what I'm reading, and see which series I don't read are on the rise. In real life, I really only know about three people that I have a good friendship with that read manga, watch anime, or take part in both. I personally read shounen and seinen only really.

Hmm, it is indeed interesting to see people here that from "desi" (idk), never really thought how much anime and manga scene expanded all the way there lol. I just noticed that a couple of you guys use the word "uni" for university; I thought only Aussies (Australians) use that lol. Just saying of course... btw I'm not desi, just an Australian-Filipino biggrin
