Why does it take so long for the romance to start?

Shoujo is a demographic I usually avoid like the plague, the main reason is that it takes so so so so long for the mc's to get together. Like 100+ chapters and that irritates me. In shounen there's always action or comedy to keep me reading but nada in shoujo. It's basically just about very slow romance and friendship which is an everyday thing except the romance because in where I live, I don't know about others, if a guy likes a girl or other way around, they tell them. They never do the slow falling in love thing which people claim is so realistic but it actually isn't, it's realistic for adults, not middle and high schoolers, I would know, I'm in year 10 / a freshman. I guess my point is why does it take so freaking long for the characters to get together. confused

What is the point of this post? o.O

I can assure you, that you probably read many bad examples, there are also good ones.
And please remember that shounen romcoms also include those very (*cough*) high quality (*cough*) harem and ecchi series. I dare say I had to avoid more bad shounen romance than I read bad shoujo romance.

In addition both demographics utilize that aspect completely differently. In shounen you often have romance as a useful (better: convenient) tool to drive the plot forward or for comedic relief, while shoujos often focus heavily (or only) on the romance. That takes more time because character development is THE most important thing. It's finding, realizing and growing through love instead of keeping it (there are good examples for that too though).

Compare that with shounen where characters or personalities often stagnate, or they change because of external influences, not because they want to change.

And who said slow romances are realistic? From my experiences attraction is fast, but more stuff evolves pretty quickly from that. You can only call it slow if both people are so damn shy that they don't say anything for years... Why would that change for adults? I'd say that's even faster for them because they are more direct in expressing what they want because they personalities are fully developed.

btw: don't read 100+ chapter romance shoujos. no matter how good the character development is, there is a point where things can only get worse.

I sincerely don't understand why shoujo takes so long to develop

When I asked about this before, a friend told me that it is more realistic to take years to find out you have a crush in someone. I read mostly main stream shoujo which are freaking LNG and so boring I can never complete any of them. Except if it's anime and has a separate plot like Ouran High school host club or betrayal knows my name.
I just get irritated when the mc finds out she likes the guy in chapter 40 then they start dating in chapter 97 or something like that. A manga I like that is realistic and isn't like that is Tonari no kaibutsu kun

Hm then you just have extremely bad luck with choosing shoujo...
I don't think I have seen many of them with that many chapters.
I should advise you again: don't read mainstream shoujo, they have way too much popularity to get anything good out of it.
high-school romances should not take more than 30 chapters, or everything just repeats itself ><
things like Akagami no Shirayukihime could go on for hundreds of chapters without any problems though because the world is just so big...

It takes longer because character development is a much slower process than other stuff. In shounen the MC often has no need to change anything because he gets the girl anyway. So that takes no time of course.

Best (or worst) example: Kimi ni Todoke
started off well with constantly changing personalities -> started repeating stuff -> characters stopped developing -> dropped it
even them getting together didn't change a thing

shoujos generally keep trends, i.e. when it starts getting bad, drop it, because it will almost never get better after that. In exchange they have a steep curve in the beginning, that's what makes short ones so good.

To be quite honest, it looks like you're generalizing all shoujo mangas. I can assure you that the majority of them are not that tedious or takes that long to come to some conclusion. When it comes down to shoujo it really depends on the mangaka and the setting as well. For example, I wouldn't dare read Skip beat!, because that manga is clearly about the mc reaching her goal in the lime light. This manga can go on for ages because of it's settings, same goes for the manga, the one. So like Lorska said, you should really stay away from main stream shoujos as they tend to have settings where the mangaka can milk it dry (produce hundreds of unnecessary chapters or take extremely long to come to some resolve)
