I'm looking for an action manga with plot and serious characters, no highschooler saving world etc.
Examples:
Dendrobates
Kimi no Knife(although this is not really action still good)

Romance is acceptable but shouldnt be focus
No hentai, yaoi, harem
Yuri is acceptable smile

Quote from Varn14

"realistic" lol. It's about as realistic as Naruto.

Kozure Ookami is the most realistic action manga I have read I guess, but still there is stuff like ki (not for the attacks as far as I've read though) and MC is insanely strong. Sun ken rock is again relatively realistic. If you can stand time travel Zipang is very good, and now going crazy what would happen if a gate would open in today's Japan leading to a world of medieval fantasy (Gate - Jietai Kare no Chi nite, Kaku Tatakeri). Sorry for the last one smile Enjoy.

Koroshiya 1 - quite gory, and sometimes the violence is so over the top they look funny. but good.
Afterschool War Activities - this do involve highschoolers trying to kill aliens, however the stuff thats happening feels realistic. so many kids die since they are just normal high school kids.
Eden - It's an Endless World! - theres some cyberpunk happening here, but for the most part the terrorist actions here is very realistic
Freesia - revenge killing is allowed is quite unrealistic, but the killings themselves are pretty realistic
Jiraishin - the MC is very OP, but try it

I guess you have read these, but in case you haven't, works by URASAWA Naoki. They are just awesome, and must-read imo. The best would be 20 Seiki Shounen and Monster.

+1 for Holyland (you may want to check out Jisatsutou by the same author), Koroshiya 1, Freesia, Vagabond and Historie, .

Sanctuary
Mugen no Juunin
Akira, though the characters might be young for your liking.

Drifters seems to fit your bill - save for the 'dying then going into the afterlife' part. Otherwise, I think you'll enjoy it. The characters are all historical - so if you're a history nerd, you'll enjoy it.

not sure if any manga is really realistic, but here are a few that might work for you

Chang Ge Xing
Gunka no Baltzar
Ichi
Wu Dao Kuang Zhi Shi -not too sure about this one because if have only read the beginning so far

though action is not the main focus in some of these there are hardly any romance in any of them

I would recommend Akira too. I can vouch for the fact that, though the protagonist is a teenager, there's no teen angst or preschool-level romances... plus he only actually attends school a handful of times, mostly at the beginning of the story. I don't know whether it would entirely fit your definition of realistic, since there are psychic powers, but the plot and character behaviour are logical.

Freesia was awesome as well.

Other recommendations - Maybe Mother Sarah, also by Otomo Katsuhiro, but it's sci-fi - takes place in the future - so it might not qualify as realistic either.

You've probably read Rurouni Kenshin.
