I'm looking for a manga in which a character (preferably the main one) is selfish and/or in conflict with the law and is faced with the situation in which he/she can either save himself/herself or risk death/arrest and choose the greater good (like saving a lot of people, or his friends or something like that). And after an internal conflict between conscience and self-preservation instinct chooses the greater good.

I can't think of any examples of such situation in manga (which is why I'm posting this request), but I think there should be some because this scenario is quite popular in movies and books. I hope everything is clear, but if it's not, I'll try to explain.

Please don't suggest ecchi or anything with sexually explicit content.

I guess Hoshi no Samidare kind of fits (unless I misunderstood completely none )

Maybe Jigokuren, the theme of this manga is atonement and the MC is selfish and morally passive (he doesn't do anything evil but nothing good either). By the end, we get something approaching what you want. It has nudity (it's hell after all), but honestly I wouldn't count it as fanservice.

Other than that it's kind of a recurrent trope in shounen to have evil or amoral characters do something good, because of the power of friendship or whatever. For example, in One Piece a lot of villains do what you describe, even to the point of sacrificing themselves, like Don Krieg's second in one of the first arcs (protecting sanji), Crocodile during marineford (protecting luffy), Mr 3 (helping luffy and his brother), Mr 2 (repeatedly) etc..

The blatantly obvious one for me is Gantz - the character growth of the MC from weak and cowardly guy to self/loved one-sacrificing hero guy is basically the main theme of the story.

Edit: After making this post, I read a few of the Gantz reviews and it reminded me of some parts I had forgotten (like rape...) so I think the content is probably too provocative. Sorry OP.

Maybe ib - Instant Bullet?

He's a bit more of the anti-hero than a particularly bad guy.
