I would like a story where the characters are students at an interesting school (school for magicians, monsters, superpowers, etc), but they actually learn things.

More often than not, the powers themselves are just glazed over and the MC just has sudden willpower and blasts everyone away. I want a story where the focus is more on actually learning about magic/power.

I guess the closest ones I can think of are:

Magi (one arc he learns from magic school)
The Breaker (kinda...)
Mx0
Boku no Hero Academia (though it is just starting)
Naruto/One Piece/Bleach (before they all just started oneshotting everyone)

It doesn't have to be a school setting either, that is just my preference.

Do you read novels?
Douluo Dalu (Novel) it's a good series
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (Novel) this one might be stretching because the main protagonist is a genius (i guess you can call him that) but its in a school setting.
These two is adapted to mangas but the novel is more detailed
Douluo Dalu
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei

Flying Witch and Ran to Haiiro no Sekai explain magic well.
Hunter x Hunter never became shonen fighty(it is a deconstruction) and still explains and follows the set rules.

Mahou Sensei Negima! the sensei the one learning magic, but overall the girls also learn some. lots of underage panties here.

Veritas martial art plus 'science' school. hazy on the teaching though.

Samurai High School no real teaching here, just if you like weird school in itself.

mushoku tensei (novel) great magic foundation

Not sure if it meets your request but I thought of City of Dead Sorcerer immediately after I heard the thread title.

Hmm, in a school setting maybe Soul Eater and Medaka Box and maybe even Area D and Deadman Wonderland that take place in prison, if you're looking for an institutional setting with young characters and powers.

I think maybe Rosario+Vampire really works as a sort of school with magic theres not a whole lot of teaching in there but there is a training arc where someone learns how to use their powers.
biggrin

have you read unique legend (Novel)?
sometimes I wish they would stop teaching me about the mechanics of interesting magic and just get on with it xD
it's usually pretty humorous though...

... I'll probably need a lot more thought before I can recommend more, I don't want to just dump ones that don't fit on you...

Rosario+Vampire Second that one, not alot of info about the teachings but there is training etc.

Mahou Sensei Negima! Seconded. Really good this one. I recommend

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei also seconded. The manga was never finished, but afaik the novel is. There's also an anime out that was very enjoyable.

Now for a few of my own recommendations.

Hundred For now the focus hasn't been learning. But I think there will be some?
Trinity Seven: 7-Nin no Mahoutsukai Has a lot of focus on learning. Not detailed but still. Kinda Ecchi though
Maken-Ki! I have to be honest that I'm not sure how well it fits, but it kinda does?
Special Martial Arts Extreme Hell Private High School Well the name says it all.
UQ Holder! <Same mangaka as Mahou Sensei Negima..We've barely scraped the surface in this one and it's ongoing, there haven't been alot of lessons yet and its not a school per-say but he has a teacher.

It was hard to find anything specific tbh. Was going to reccomend Mx0 but you've read it already. Well I hope there was any good ones that I recommended!
Have a good one!

Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou (Novel)... Haven't read the manga but the novel was mostly enjoyable... Gets a bit weird toward the end though biggrin
