There are so many sports mangas where the protagonist/protagonist's team seems to be an instant God at [instert sport] and win 100% of the time. roll eyes What are some good sports manga where the main character/s lose/have to practice/train to get better?

Thanks. biggrin

Baby Steps - he train really hard, and dont always win
All Rounder Meguru - very realistic, dont always win
One Outs - the protagonist himself is very good, however the team, which he train, is not.

Slam Dunk - Basketball
You should definitely check this one. The protagonist while having potential doesn't become the best immediately unlike so many other mangas. He's even very bad at many things for a long time to the point of being mocked/booed. And well, his team doesn't win all the time either...

Hikaru No Go - Go
Another favorite in the genre of sport/competitive games. The MC learns fast, but it still takes him years for him to actually become very good. For example the MC had difficulty playing some guy in school (the captain of the opposing team), and later gets to know that this guy was considered weak by aspiring pro-players ! That's the spirit of this manga where even talented players have to focus all their time playing/training, no matter their potential...

Ookiku Furikabutte - Baseball
What's really cool with this one is that most of the players already have experience. They don't discover the sports and become geniuses, they already have years of experience and good bases. The MC (pitcher) has a very difficult personality to work with, he also has a lot of weaknesses. The mathes get won or lost not because of luck/spirit/talent//<insert shounen trope here> but because of strategy.

Ashita no Joe Is a certified classic with an unforgettable and famous ending and Real is barely about sports.
Ballroom e Youkoso Let´s see where this new one goes.
Ja Ja Uma Grooming UP! Like Gin no Saji but a bit better.
Kiss & Never Cry Just read my review.
Moon Is a bit different overall in it´s focus.
Noririn Is this even a sports manga?
RideBack The sports aspects stops pretty fast and gritty murder and social revolt begin.
All something different eh?
