OK my friends, I'm doing another panel and would like your help. This is mostly just for fun, and will make up a minute or two of my crash course in manga and anime for first-time convention-goers.

Please if so inclined, list the one title that you think best exemplifies each genre. If you don't read that genre, just leave it blank. Thank you!

Drama:
Fantasy:

It's quite hard actually to choose a manga that best represent its genre. Normally, I'll pick up a manga title that in my opinion most suitably represent its genre, not considering the manga popularity, the reading difficulty of the manga, etc. But, since it's a panel that aimed for first-time anime and manga convention-goers, I'll just stick with the popular ones.

Action: Naruto
Adventure: Hunter x Hunter
Coming-of-Age: Aoi Hana if you don't really mind LGBT stuff, otherwise Koe no Katachi
Comedy: Gintama
Cooking / Baking: Cooking Master Boy
Drama: Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai
Fantasy: Anything by Studio Ghibli
Gender Bender: Bokura no Hentai and Ame Nochi Hare (Bikke)
Historical: Otoyomegatari
Horror: ITOU Junji
Musicians / Actors / Models: Beck
Mystery: Death Note
Psychological: Liar Game
Romance: Toradora!
School Life: Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou
Science Fiction: 2001 Nights
Slice of Life: Aria and its prequel Aqua
Sports: Ashita no Joe
Supernatural: Mushishi
Tragedy:Gunslinger Girl

Sorry for the bad english, I'm still learning. smile

All right I'll try my best...

Action: Bleach I know it's overrated. I know! But I still love it and at this point the action is practically all it has going for it.
Adventure: Saiyuki
Comedy: Angel Densetsu or Beelzebub, that one's hard, there's a lot of good ones
Horror: Monster, scariest thing I've ever read ever
Romance: Ran and the Gray World
Sci Fi: Kiseijuu
Slice of Life: Mushishi
Supernatural/Fantasy: xxxHolic, this is way too broad to be objective, but that's my favorite.
Tragedy: Berserk I feel like this could represent a bunch of different genres really well, but I think it imbues tragedy the best.

You are all awesome! Thanks so much!

I like to get suggestions so I'm not just basing it on my own tastes. Some of these reminded me of things I'd forgotten, others confirmed my choices, and some were really good fits for categories I hadn't considered.

One of the things that interests me is that the best titles work in several categories, such as 7 Seeds, FMA, Berserk, Pluto, or Otoyomegatari. I was almost tempted to use Hunter x Hunter for everything. laugh I think the only genres it doesn't have are Music or Arts, and School Life, which is the one you'd assume a story with 12 year-old protagonists would have!

dyn69, I'm expecting some of the attendees to be parents who have to come to the convention with underage kids. If all my examples are yaoi, they'll clap their hands over the kids' eyes and demand a refund! (I can save them for a yaoi panel!)

So thank you all! Now I have to find images that at a glance will convey the genre.

Action: Yu Yu Hakusho
Adventure:Golden Boy (after reading you may want to go on an adventure)
Coming-of-Age: Usagi Drop
Comedy: Angel Densetsu (bad drawing, but great manga)
Cooking / Baking: Addicted to Curry or Shokugeki no Soma
Drama: Fruit Beasket
Fantasy: Full metal Alchemist
Historical: Kingdom (not sure about accuracy, but a fun one)
Horror: Doubt (TONOGAI Yoshiki)
Musicians / Actors / Models: Skip Beat (if you go for anime, you may also want to see Nodame Cantabile)
Mystery: Meitantei Conan (not great mysteries, but lots of small ones)
Psychological: Akumetsu (great manga, but not so sure if it is the example of the genre)
Romance: Koukou Debut (same as above)
School Life: School Rumble / Azumanga Daioh
Science Fiction: Planetes (the only one I remember, but may have better ones out there)
Slice of Life: Aqua/Aria or Yotsubato
Sports: Slam Dunk (classic)
