This week's poll from Toushin is a bit wordy and could potentially be confusing. We're talking about the case where you're reading a series, and suddenly you discover that chapters 45-50 were never scanlated, but someone else scanlated starting from chapter 51 and on. As a reader, what do you do about the missing releases? I'd personally just stop reading and wait. But it sucks...sigh...

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: If you were an assistant for your favorite mangaka, what would you love most about the job?
Choices:
Getting paid - votes: 1410 (14.7%)
Touching the mangaka - votes: 184 (1.9%)
Being the first one to see the next chapter - votes: 2342 (24.5%)
Witnessing the mangaka at work - votes: 788 (8.2%)
Seeing the mangaka's face - votes: 19 (0.2%)
Breathing in the same air as the mangaka - votes: 96 (1%)
Having the mangaka's phone number - votes: 20 (0.2%)
Talking with the mangaka about his/her manga - votes: 1278 (13.3%)
Knowing the mangaka on a personal level - votes: 942 (9.8%)
Being the mangaka's idea bank - votes: 680 (7.1%)
Adding/refining drawing details - votes: 127 (1.3%)
Cleaning artwork going out of panels - votes: 32 (0.3%)
Being listed in the credits for a series - votes: 191 (2%)
Gaining experience as an artist - votes: 1258 (13.1%)
Other - votes: 210 (2.2%)
There were 9577 total votes.
The poll ended: May 30th 2015

I should've modified the "first to see the chapter" option to include the idea of spoiling the chapter for everyone

With the help of a (kanji)dictionary I can read japanese just fine, so I would just try to find the raws. Unfortunately, finding the raws is sometimes pretty much impossible :/ All you find these days are the chinese scanlations.

The mighty gap, have a couple of incredible big gaps at sport's manga, even if I voted stop reading I once skiped first because I didn't notice and second because the gap was less than 10 chapters, other annoying gap was with Tokio Ghoul where I remember more the desperation than what did I did.

Look around for or text translations or it may be available in German. The things i find while digging and i look at raws also. Direct adaptations to anime can help too as the Wangan Midnight anime for example went way further than the scanlation (but skipped a 1 volume arc). I will never just skip from point X to point Y if there is a gap and no solution to be found as i have time and respect for the source material.

Depends on the length. A chapter or two missing is no big deal, I can try to guess whats going on with raws or just skip it all together if I'm not particularly attached to that moment in the series, especially if many volumes have been translated past that section. However, a large section of about a volume or more, I HAVE to search for text translations. I can't just skip something that length and not miss something important. Worst case scenario, I wait.

Oh man, I hate it when a chunk of the manga is not translated... and I usually wait because I don't like ruining my experience by getting exposed to a future portion of the manga suddenly...

But sometimes, if the gap is only 1-4 chapters long, I will just skip ahead and figure out what I missed on my own. roll

Fortunately, I rarely seem to have the misfortune of choosing to read series with gaps in the releases.
Usually I'll look for raws or just skip it altogether if I can't find any.

A friend of mine tried to find a missing chapter in an 8 volume shoujo series which has long been "completely scanlated". It's pretty ridiculous for groups to work on sporadic chapters and end up missing some due to misunderstandings or just dropping the series.

Depends... For something I just read to pass time I would wait and switch to another time-passing series.
If the series was really good and I became hooked, then I would read raws. Works only for Japanese, though. I would get stuck if the source material was in Korean or Chinese. In that case... buggi─... asking the scanlator to take pity on me and close the gap should do th─... Oh, no option for that in this poll.

Patience it is, then. roll

Well, I would Find the raws and try and try to figure out what's going on...if that doesn't work, then, I will - Look around for or text translations Or. In the worst case scenario I will Skip the missing chapters and just continue reading...

This doesn't happen to me normally, as most of the names I read aren't so unpopular or. most likely have a stable scanlation group or translator...!

Fortunately I don't deal with problem often (usually its just that the scanlator drops the series entirely). But I think it would depend on the progress of the series and how many chapters were skipped. For some manga, if you skip a few chapters you can still understand what's going on. For others, if you skip a few chapters you can really become lost and miss some major points in plot development. But I find that even when I can understand what's going on in the manga after skipping a few chapters, I still feel like I missed out on something and continuing to read after the gap isn't really satisfying.

Depends on how big the gap is.

If its just a few chapters, meh.

If its a couple dozen/over a hundred, I'll come back in a few weeks/months.

This week's poll is great. If a storyline is very interesting, I always tend to look for the raws to guess what's going to happen next (whether or not the later chapters are scanlated).

As others have mentioned, I think it would really depend on how hooked the manga got me! If I'm reallyyy curious, I think I might very well just take a peek and jump ahead. wink Especially with more obscure manga in which case the timeliness of scanlations can't be guaranteed. Otherwise, however, I'd prefer to wait, and keep the title on my Current Reading list here on MU, haha~

Case in point: Chihayafuru, still waiting; Don't care if there is an anime either.

Can read the raws, but it’s a bit bothersome and I’ve got lots of other series so I’ll usually just wait. There are exceptions though, for example Noragami, where I read the missing part in Japanese. But in the case of Tokyo Ghoul I waited because the scanlation group was doing a great job and their releases were fast anyway.
So, it mostly depends on the series and how fast the scanlators are.
