I was recently reading Hitorimi Haduki-san to. and came very close to dropping it because while good it was pretty run-of-the-mill shoujo, then all of a sudden the story took a turn that was very unique and revealed that one of the characters was dealing with a mental disorder and this breathed a whole new dimension into the story and kept me hooked.

Mental illness and disorders are a hard story element to deal with, and I'm looking for some works that takes a more optimistic and hopeful attitude toward the mental illness. I'm interested in anything that shows mental illness and disorders ranging from severe to mild and can also include developmental issues, it does not have to be linked exactly to any exact problem either but could also be mental problems due to past experiences.

Examples:
Hitorimi Haduki-san to.
Horimiya
Issho ni Neyou yo
Hakuji
unTOUCHable (Massstar)
Dokuhime

I don't need it to be the main focus of the story, and the story doesn't necessarily need to be romance and can range from realistic to fantasy. I DO NOT want yaoi/yuri/shounen ai/shoujo ai, lolicon/shoutocon, ecchi.

Any suggestions?

The most obvious one is Dr. Frost
Pine in the Flower Garden
Real
Diamond Dust (KANG Hyung-Gyu)
Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan
Koe no Katachi
Welcome to Room #305! has one arc about a character with gender dysphoria.
Sekine-kun no Koi

There's probably more. I'm surprised there isn't already a tag for mental illness. I'll add more as I think of them.

Thanks so much!

There is a tag for 'mental illness' but that really narrows what I'm looking for, so I decided to turn to other manga readers for some help biggrin

Any others?

Try Mozuya-san Gyakujousuru. It says it's about a "tsundere syndrome", but it's actually closer to paranoid schizophrenia.

I think Melo Holic fits. It starts off real slow, but stick with it, you'll know what I mean.

Read it up, you won't regret it.

With The Light
a manga about a young child growing up with autism spectrum d/o and the obstacles his family goes through to raise him healthily. It's a wonderful story but it is not available anywhere online for a free read. I found it very inspiring though.

I also second
Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan (Not sure if I recall correctly but the d/o is depression I believe).
Koe no Katachi (deaf child)
those two are great mangas that are quite inspiring if not reflective of life.

Othello.
Multipersonality d/o or more technically dissociative identity d/o. Not the best manga nor is the disorder correctly represented.

Kare Kano
Mars
Not surprised if you read these two.
