Kind of a hard request, but can you can recommend something you read that didn't go "by the book"? You know, those mangas that are just so unique you don't know what to expect to happen next and such. Keep in mind that this is not about a plot twist. biggrin

Homunculus : it's particularly heavy and complex. Disgusting but appealing at the same time.
Vinland Saga : the story evolved in a way I never expected and amazed me ( what made a lot of people hate the manga made it my favorite ). It's more than plot twists, it's probably the deepest character development I've seen, going as far as changing the manga's genre.
1/11 : the story telling is special and tells the life of a single character through the eyes of others.

Interesting request, here are a few suggestions:

Children of the Sea (Complete, Seinen)
Ashita no Ousama (Complete, Josei, different from usual "entertainment industry" manga)
Suiiki (Complete, Seinen)
Marginal (Complete, very different sci-fi Shounen-Ai)
Sakura-Gari (Complete, Watase Yuu's best work in my opinion, also Shounen-Ai)

Pandora Hearts takes a lot of traditional shounen and fantasy tropes and turns them on their heads. AND it has major (and well-supported) plot twists. I see that it's on your wishlist. Please move it to your reading list. biggrin

Ana Satsujin is stupid as anything with its premise, but part of me thinks it doesn't want to be taken entirely seriously? I don't usually read ecchi, but this has managed to keep me darkly amused thus far, and it's definitely off the beaten path. Good for if you want to read something kind of stupid, kind of sexy, and really, really odd.

Nowhere Boy will catch you off-guard with its well-executed mood whiplashes and the depth it offers under its cutely superficial exterior. I haven't come across such a dynamic tragicomedy since.

Bastard (HWANG Youngchan) offers a disturbing take on an already eerie premise (Adult Fear to the max!!) and a refreshing variant of antihero... er, antivillain? confused Well, whatever he is, he's fascinating, and the plot thus far is uncomfortably claustrophobic and unpredictable -- definitely heavy on the thriller aspects.

Onani Master Kurosawa is about a guy who jacks off. That's literally the premise. And if you can stomach that, it's surprisingly really good. If a well-developed psychological manga about a boy who ejaculates onto people's clothing isn't unorthodox, then I'm afraid I don't know what is. laugh

And, if you can handle intense, Doreiku - Boku to 23-nin no Dorei has a rather unique premise that you might think would lead to lots of smut but doesn't. It's played completely for horror instead (again, Adult Fear) and even gets pretty psychological with some very taboo subjects.

There are some pretty avant-garde webtoons out there in general if you're looking for things that haven't really been done before. wink

I agree, there was a time I was really into webtoons, but I kind of got bored of most them after a while because of their tendencies to have a REALLY slow pace. But I never read the 2 you mentioned and they look really interesting, especially Nowhere Boy. biggrin

Threads of Time - This is one of my favorites. It is well drawn and the characters pull you in. I went in thinking it would be a story of revenge but it turned into a story of redemtion.

This is a great request! Let's see what I can contribute.

Matsumoto Taiyou is a mangaka you should definitely look into. I can safely recommend most of his titles, except possibly Sunny, Ping Pong and Hanaotoko -- all of which, while lovely in their own way, are pretty different from his normal unorthodox fare.

There are plenty of mangaka who favour the weird and unusual over the stereotypical:

Igarashi Daisuke, author of the aforementioned Children of the Sea.
Koike Keiichi -- Especially Ultra Heaven
Furuya Usamaru
Kago Shintaro -- Only his non-H works. I have no idea what the hentai ones are like.
Itou Junji
Nishioka Kyoudai
Kuroda Iou -- Notably Nainippon Tengu Toukaishi, but also most of his other works.
Kaneko Atsushi
Otsuka Eiji, author of Kurosagi Shitai Takuhaibin.
Douman Seiman -- I can only vouch for The Voynich Hotel and Nickelodeon myself, but he has a reputation for quirky brilliance among his fans.
Matsumoto Jiro
Hisa Masato -- Particularly Area 51 and Jabberwocky

As for series:
K no Souretsu
Getenrou
Motto, Ikitai...
Under Execution Under Jailbreak
Murder Incarnation
Pure Trance
Kiss Wood -- I hope you can overcome your reservations about webtoons and read this; it's of a reasonable length, doesn't drag, and is quite unique for its genre.
Goth
Franken Fran
Nijigahara Holograph
Bakune Young
Diabolo -- A pretty unusual take on the "cursed children" concept.
Kokumin Quiz
Wolf & Mary
Sakigake!! Cromartie Koukou, Level E and Zai x 10 are actually gag manga, but they're just so...unique. And funny in an unexpectedly clever way.
Himizu
Milk Closet
Henjin Henkutsu Retsuden
Takemitsu Zamurai
Rojiura Daiikku
Fetish
Ashizuri Suizokukan
Hikidashi ni Terrarium
Henshin no News
Nozokiya
Swweeet
Kuro to Maruko
Doctor Du Ming -- I have no fondness for this manhua. At all. But it does fit your request: a very odd "love story."
Houseki no Kuni

Okay, so this might sound annoying, but have you tried the Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken series? It's very, very unorthodox for an action/adventure manga. The incredibly unique person-specific powers/abilities; the prison full of weirdos with even weirder skills; the mask that gives people powers and then manipulates their fate; the race across North America to collect Jesus' mummified body parts; the mangaka who can read people like a book (as in, they literally turn into books so he can read their life stories); the serial killer who disposes of his GF's by remote-detonating virtual bombs and just wants to live a peaceful life as an office worker... And so it goes.

Well, I was going to recommend you check out this thread, but calstine seems to have covered most of the series posted there and more... Well, I'll just repeat the series and authors I mentioned there that haven't been posted here yet, with a few extras:

Mangaka:
YOKOYAMA Yuuichi - No scanlations, only licensed works that are going out of print... (1 or 2 have been scanned).
KATOU Shinkichi
MOROHOSHI Daijirou
Murai - A pretty new artist who seems to specialize in short, surreal stories.
TSUGE Yoshiharu

Series recommendations:
Hansel and Gretel - as well as a fair number of other older oneshots by Otomo
B-flat no Sonata
Fourteen

Ryuguden & Paperakyu - by the same author as Bakune Young recommended above, in my opinion they both surpass it.

Jacarandá - not really the most unorthodox work by Shiriagari, but the only series of his that's completely available in English at this time... If you're looking for some untranslated series to add to that wish list of yours, I'd recommend A○S (my number 1 wishlist item), Hinshi no Essayist, "Haikai Roujin" Don Quixote & Yajikita in Deep - maybe they'll get translated within the next few years...

General oneshot recommendations:
Keep an eye out for any oneshots from Garo magazine that get released, usually by Habanero Scans.

Feh Yes Vintage Manga also releases some rather bizarre old school oneshots from time to time.

For works already released, oneshots scanlated by Kotonoha that were published in Comic Cue magazine should usually fit what you're looking for.

Quote from calstine
Kago Shintaro -- Only his non-H works. I have no idea what the hentai ones are like.

I feel that which of his works get listed as hentai varies over time based on the temperament of whichever MU updater last stumbled across a given series of his... Though if there is a difference, I'd guess his "hentai" works focus (even more) upon feces.
