It really depends, if it's done well, sure I'll accept it, but if it's not, then there's kinda no point reading it. Though change of importance/relevance would be really annoying no matter what. It's just a bit crazy to demote a main character to a supporting character or vice versa for the rest of the same story (spin-offs would be a different matter).

Any drastic change would annoy me to no end, but I chose gender. That would make NO sense at all and I would loathe it if the author changed it. Seriously.
To those who chose "Nothing would affect me": Haha! Nice try, but no one would ever believe you, because anyone would be affected- some more, others less. But not at all? Never.

The question seems a bit odd to me. With any change, the nature of the change is less important than whether or not the author justifies it properly.

In the end, I picked beliefs/values, although that has a lot of overlap with personality shift. A character suddenly acting like someone completely different is one of the more annoying possible changes, and it's one authors frequently don't even attempt to justify.

I agree, which is why I went with change in importance/ relevance in the end. Any change would be fine with me if it's well executed, but seeing my favorite character shoved to the sidelines (or killed off, which is far more common) always bums me out, regardless of how much I enjoy the story.

I can only really answer based on what I've experienced before, which is a change in importance/relevance. What I'm thinking of is when a main character is suddenly made a side character, and a new main character enters the picture. Just recently I was reading a manga where the first chapter is about one couple falling in love. The other chapters in this 8 volume long manga is about a different couple. There seemed to be no reason for the change of main characters, and the first couples story is never fully developed.

I think that if the author is good at making a reasonable explanation for the change, any of these changes could work. Any of these work if they fit the story, and it is written well enough. But from the manga I've read, the change that has annoyed me the most is the change in importance/relevance because often times it isn't handled well.

Agree with the two before me. Most changes can somehow be justified and well executed, but making a character suddenly irrelevant is always a bummer.

Strangely worded poll....and it depends on the story as well as genre. Any radical change that is irrelevant and clearly a ploy to garner readers just to save itself is offputting.

Like others have said change is ok if its justified well. The 2 that irk me the most and often aren't handled well are the personality shift or beliefs/values shift. Stuff that comes out of nowhere with little to no build up really ticks me off. For example if a character is morally white and something happens to them and they become a bit grey or even a bit dark that makes sense. Going from one polar opposite to the other in one jump with little in the way of explanation (character development) is irritating particularly if it had been a strong character. This also happens if a character had been insane then becomes sane, a character who is evil/good and then flips personalities, etc, etc. I chose Beliefs/values because if its a core part of the character a change like that shouldn't be glossed over...its just irritating when a character acts contrary to...well their character without good explanation.

In my opinion, any kind of change is welcome as long as it's well done, and I'm actually rather fond of that. However I'd say a change of beliefs is what I prefer, seeing how well it worked in Vinland Saga.

Why are so many people voting for gender? confused Gender doesn't affect personality, so it's not much different from a physical appearance redesign.

Well, I do assume the author gives a good reason for the poll option changes, as opposed to just going insane and pulling a change from nowhere. I think pulling any of these changes from nowhere would be irritating, unless it was a nonsequitur sort of series from the start.

Are there actually any series that changed a main character's gender partway through? The only one I can think of is March Story, where the character was female the whole time but assumed to be male by the readers, but even then it was revealed in chapter 3. I guess Kingdom tried to do it with Ka Ryo Ten, but it was really obvious she was a girl from the very start. I don't know of any series that physically changed the characters for a sudden gender change.

Good poll- think it's very similar to an older poll... I didn't vote, because almost all of these are equally annoying. I prefer adherence to continuation. There's no need to make drastic and/or unexplained sudden changes to anything unless the mangaka develops a thorough transition to the change. I personally find it frustrating when a character suddenly looks or acts totally differently to how they looked like or behaved in the previous chapters or volumes; or suddenly went to a different alliance or love interest without any warning...

The new poll seems meaningless, since any of the transitions can have a legitimate, well-thought-out reason within a certain context.

I think the best option to add is "Transition which makes no sense" roll eyes

Nothing onthe poll would afect me, but amnesia is the most annoing one for me. Since all the personal relations of the charcter are reseted. It really bugs me and you should add it to the poll it is missing there.

Nothing would *annoy* me if it was in line with - and for the sake of- the story. The story is more important than the reader.

But if s/he was changed because of either whiny feedback, or because the author didn't plan the story ahead of time (thus forcing himself or wanting to change something), then everything would annoy me.
