Why don't more people upload cover images onto MU?

It's not like you need to know Japanese to do it. I must have uploaded 1100+ cover images on to MU. Most pages have the Japanese characters of that particular manga and putting that into Google gets you the image. Sometimes putting the mangaka's name in Japanese characters which is usually on their page helps narrow it down further.

I think it's just that most users aren't contributors.

Also I feel like it's hard to even start because this database has so many errors/incomplete entries. I've made some submissions and modifications, but sometimes it feels futile given the sheer number of series out there.

Another one of those eh? The database has enough problems (report errors every time you see them) and very new or old series (or fan comics/porn) are typically the ones with no cover. These are second class sensitizes as they have no scanlation/translation going and such are the focus of the site. It used to be different but i still would start to look after manga the site is supposed to focus on firstly in an case.

I understand that, but what other kind of database do English users have?. If I want to see what other work a guy has done before that was never scanlated, where do I go?. I know about so many more interesting looking manga by just seeing a picture of it. If the database was more fleshed out then maybe scanlators could find out about different manga this way.

90% of users are leeches

9% of users are either unable to do so for one reason or another

1% of users are contributors like you.

Theres also the fact that a lot of people are just plain tired of seeing DMCAs nuke their work. Love of a hobby is no excuse for watching countless hours be destroyed (or worse, fines and/or jail time).

You can´t rely on one database alone (i don´t do it in my job either) so you will need to hound the MALs and the ANNs, the Wikis and so on too. Even Comic Vine lists highly random manga and a one size fits all solutions is ultimately a bad idea.
Piracy is also a crime and we are all the culprits so let´s not get on a high horse in that regard either. Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time.
Edit: Auto translate is certainly a trip and a half...

I don't think most scanslators even use MU as a source of finding manga to work on half the time. Most of us already use our own resources. Plus a lot of groups depend on leaked raws for stuff they plan on working on. Most don't buy their manga titles.

I use MU to create a list of titles that have been abandoned that I wouldn't mind picking up along with adding any of my releases.

You mention how to find stuff an author has done that's not in the data base. Try either finding the authors site and most of the time they have a work history or use amazon.jp and search up the author. smile Again various resources. Use auto translate, it's not very good but it will give you a general idea of what is being said.

I used to do that, but now that I know a bit more Japanese I use the rikai-kun plug in on google chrome. I would recommend it bigrazz

If I dare say I'm one of those people that also uploads the cover images whenever I see a missing cover or if it's simply not up to date.
There is one catch though. I upload the covers only on those series that I currently work on, read, have read, or will read in the future. So basically, just those that are located on one of my lists. Also, whenever I do that, I also make sure that all the other data is up to date, i.e. volume number, scanlated or not, other names, relations to other series, and so on. I quite often connect various oneshots we have here to their original series, just by doing a 5-minute research.

There is one database (can't remember the name at the moment) I use from time to time to get the old cover images, and I wish MU has that option implemented too, where you can go through the cover images of all the volumes. It's super useful.
I often find myself competing with some people (on more popular series) if whether we should have the cover image from volume 1, or from the latest published volume. So I really wish MU would implement that option. For me personally the database we have here would be more complete, if we had that too.

As for the other question on where to find other series from the author, our friends here already mentioned it - MAL, ANN, Amazon.jp, Wiki, Google the author's name. (: But looking how, I believe, almost every single scanlator group uses this website to announce they're working on a particular series, it's more useful to see here which exactly series are being worked on. As for others that are not here, well that's probably because no scanlator is working on them. As soon as someone decides to work on them (they found it somewhere online - raw sites, and similar), they will update it here.
There's only a small number of people (unfortunately) who will list all the series that a particular author worked/s on for the heck of it.

Sorry for my long comment. ^_^''
