I've seen female authors that draw seinen/shounen but haven't really stumbled upon male authors that draw shoujo mangas. Either that or I'm just oblivious to the authors gender.

The two female mangakas I can think of off the top of my head and draws male oriented mangas are :

Kusunoki Kei
Toume Kei

I'm looking for the opposite of these just to get a taste of what it's like. Granted it probably isn't that different but you never know.

TANAKA Meca has done a few. I'm reading Faster Than A Kiss and 7th Period Rhapsody by him. They're both really good.

I can't think of any other mangakas right now. >_< sorry.

Whoa! I didn't realize Tanaka Meca was a guy. Hahah. I'd be interested to see who gets suggested here too. All I can think of is Motomi Kyousuke, who has a guy's name (but I'm not sure if they are actually a guy or woman)...

Hmmm... most of the early shoujo mangas authors were males, included TEZUKA Osamu, but I can't think of any other *recent* male author , sorry ^^;

Adachi Mitsuru is more recent than Tedzuka Osamu, but I don't know of any recent shoujo manga he's drawn. He drew some in the 80s though (and maybe 90s).

hahah a good question. Have anyone notice that the author that the asker mentions are both aries? smile wink grin it's not important though roll

Motomi Kyousuke is a male author? Oh... really. I like that author though. Most of the manga he/she writes is really funny

Can you tell the difference between a male author writes seinen and a female author writes on the same genre? If yes, how? I would like to know eyes

This seems like a tough topic to find info on. I did a search that brought up Yuzuki Hikaru but he doesn't seem very current either (nor does he have many titles listed on MU).

One thing I can think of is that with aliases and so on, it could be impossible to know if a mangaka really is male or female without seeing photos/seeing them in person. The series Otomen has a male character who writes shoujo manga under a girly-sounding penname. (of course, that series is a comedy and parodies many things, so I wouldn't say it's an accurate depiction of real mangaka).

As for Motomi, I didn't mean s/he is male for sure, only that names ending in -suke are generally male names. If I were to guess, I'd say female, because (her?) manga seems to be pretty familiar with the shoujo manga genre, and thus able to pull off its gags and humour so well. But it's just a guess.

edit: found this thread! It has some repeats but here are other mangaka people mentioned had done shoujo manga at some point:
Wada Shinji
Asahina Yuuya (currently writes for Ribon/Margaret)
Sugisaki Yukiru (often debated whether really male or female)
Shintani Kaoru
Matsumoto Leiji
Kitagawa Shou
Chiba Tetsuya

SUGISAKI Yukiru is definitely female. I think there are photos of her around. Do they make her look like a man? She's not a transexual. lol

Wow, I had no idea a woman wrote Rizelmine - and the same woman that wrote DNAngel and Escaflowne! (@_@) I love how mangakas transcend gender...

Quote from Rainy Days

I agree with this pick, since LEE Sang-Eun does a really good job with his series! He's done Lover Discovery, The Kidnapping of Minja Jo's Boyfriend and Utopia of Homosexuality all really good, interesting, and humorous series!

RYAN - a male manhua author that i stumbled upon recently.

was reading Prince of the Night by him, scanlated by NOIR (new series, 2 chapters scanlated so far)
will begin on his series Ingènuo (seems to be one of his more popular works) and the sequel Steel Rose

p.s. i love LEE Sang-Eun's and MOTOMI Kyousuke's series too!!! biggrin
