I myself never really listen to Critics or Reviews, it never deters me from watching a movie.

However, there are movies which have been made which spark bad criticism, bad reviews, or just make people dislike the movie in its entirety.

For me, I love these critically bashed movies:

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

Howard The Duck

Star Wars Episode I, II, and III

Tomorrowland


Which movies do you like that were a critical disaster, or even a box office bomb?

This should probably go in Other TV/Movies.

Anyway, I personally enjoy reading criticism/reviews of movies, both ones I like and dislike, but with caveats, of course. I always pay attention to who the reviewer is, and for which website they're reviewing the movie. I take it as a given that everyone has some kind of bias, and so I try and find out what their biases are and see if they are in-line with mine. And I prefer substantive criticism (as in, an actual description of which parts of the movie they disliked and why) rather than just a letter score. Because of course what might be deal-breakers for others might be entertaining for me.

As for movies that did terribly, the two that immediately come to mind are Victor Frankenstein and Annie (2016). Though I actually agree with all the reviews about why Victor Frankenstein wasn't a good movie. James McAvoy's performance simply made it worthwhile for me (since I'm a huge McAvoy fan) moreso than the terribly uninteresting plot which made it not at all worthwhile for the reviewers.

Is this the forum where i again get to suck off Zack Snydra? He is my 3rd favorite director. Super Punch is rubbish but he made a controversial kid´s film about talking owls, what more can I say?


(UC) BvS, X-men Apocalypse and Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV are among my favorite films of 2016 but all 3 combined can´t get a 100% on rottentomatoes. Sure.

@blackcats I read every issue of Howard The Duck but that film is a hate crime. His creator was a fan though.

Are you talking about Guardians of Ga'Hoole? How was it controversial? (I'm actually a huge fan of the original books, and I found the movie... underwhelming. But not terrible, especially if you aren't familiar with the original series.)

It was accused of being too violent for kids and the blatant fascism by the villains raised eyebrows too. Not that The Lion King exists or anything...

I would totally support a Care Bears reboot if Zack was in charge and i hope that the 300 "spin-off" about George Washington + his take on The Fountainhead get made.
Zack Snyder doing Ayn Rand´s "magnum opus". Can you even imagine what that would look like? Especially if it will be another hard-R. The endless slow-mo shots of skyscrapers would be something else too. Our Post-Trump world needs that film!

Really? I actually thought the movie's villains weren't fascist enough. In the books, Soren's brother is literally owl!Hitler. (He leads the Pure Ones as an empire that wholesale slaughters non-barn owls because of their perceived inferiority and then sets up ranks depending on how closely related they are to barn owls.) And he is nowhere near as "sympathetic" as the movie makes him. (He's a megalomaniac who shows no remorse about attempting to murder his brother, actually murdering his parents, and brainwashing his little sister.) If anything, I felt the movie really toned down the harshness of the books.

The main issues I felt with the movie were that it tried to condense too many books into one film and that it replaced Kludd with Metal Beak as the main antagonist. But that might just be the canon purist in me speaking.

Oh, and I just remembered another film that I enjoyed that most didn't: Welcome to the Punch. It had some really excellent actors, even if its plot was as thin as tissue paper. I don't think I would necessarily defend this movie to anyone, but I do enjoy rewatching it, if only for the moments where James McAvoy and Mark Strong stare at each other intently.

batman forever is a way worse movie and not that many ppl hate that movie

i have not seen it since but i remember laughing ALOT and that is a good thing i think
in general and especially when you watch a comedy

I probably I have shite taste since I enjoy comedy movies and comedy movies in hollywood are rarely well recieved.

you might be right that it could lack rewatchability
but that's cause everything was so memorable; perhaps in a unable to forget fashion...

Guardians of Ga'hoole books (and the spin-off series Wolves of the Beyond) also feature a MUCH higher, and up front, level of gore & squick than the film. They never could have fit half the story within the film's runtime, the individual volumes may not be the physically thickest but the series as a whole is a literal saga that spans the initial characters near entire lifetime, the aging of even YOUNGER characters, and continual branch stories threading in from a near mountain of a cast.
But I don't dislike the show.
