I've been wondering whether there were any good stories in which one or more relationships involve extreme hate/anger based on something that didn't really happen. Maybe they heard a rumor and believed it, or maybe someone found a way through theatrics or illusion/magic to make them think something happened that really didn't. I'd prefer it to be a relationship involving the MC. Either the MC becomes furious at someone important to him and spends a while seething and wanting to find that person and make him/her pay, or the MC is placed in a position where he is himself faced with extreme hate or anger on account of things he never did and never would do.

Only example that springs to mind is of the second type, MC being the object of hatred for things he'd never done and never would do: Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari. The hero is viewed with derision from the start, and after just about a day the only person to accompany him robs him blind and claims he raped her. There's no foundation for this accusation, and he would never do such a thing, but still he finds everyone hates him at first, including fellow heroes who become relatively minor characters for a while but are supposed to fight side by side with him.

Just recalled another, where the hero is the object of specific hatred from one of the heroines in a flashback. In Kaede's backstory in the game/anime Shuffle!, Kaede's mother and her childhood friend Rin's parents died in an accident trying to come home early from a trip, and Kaede's father took Rin in. Kaede wound up in the hospital from the shock and depression, basically losing any will to live. Wanting to give her something, anything, to live for, and to keep a secret, Rin goes to her at night and claims that he'd called his parents out of loneliness and forced them to come home, resulting in the crash. This did indeed give Kaede a will to live, and she spent the next several years destroying Rin's property, hurting him and wishing him dead. Then one day in junior high when she destroys a model ship he'd worked on, she discovers a postcard in Rin's room from Kaede's mother, addressed to her and sent on the day of the accident, wishing that Kaede might be able to come with her next time once she gets better. Kaede finally remembers how she'd been sick at the time, how she'd kept asking for her mother, and hearing her father call her mom to tell her that the fever had come back. Rin had known all this, knew that Kaede's illness and distress had led to the return trip where their parents died, and deliberately made her believe him to be the one responsible to hide this and give her the motivation to try and live, if only to make his life hell.

Also, there's the example of Ishigami Yuu from Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai - Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Ishigami was always something of an outcast due to his looks and his otaku nature, and he'd often fueled this by making snide remarks at people who were persecuting others, thus deliberately turning their ire toward himself. This all became much worse when he found his borderline crush's, Ohtomo Kyoko's, boyfriend cheating on her. He gathered evidence and tried to use it to make the boyfriend be faithful to Kyoko. Instead he not only refused but showed Ishigami some pictures and offered to sell Kyoko's body to him for his silence. Ishigami naturally tried to beat the bastard, only for people to see, including Kyoko, and everyone believed the boyfriend's story about Ishigami being a creepy stalker who thought he could get Kyoko by beating her boyfriend up. Thanks to this, not only was he suspended from school, but Kyoko and everyone in the school hated him as a creep and a stalker; in the meantime, Ishigami never made any effort to reveal the truth because the boyfriend had threatened to either attack Kyoko or distribute pornographic images of her.

Masamune-kun no Revenge comes to mind.

"Makabe Masamune has changed himself greatly for a single reason: he wants revenge. Contrary to his past, he has worked hard to become good-looking in order to carry out this goal. Faster than anticipated, he even meets the target of his revenge the first day after transferring in.. Adagaki Aki! He wastes no time beginning his plan, but revenge doesn't come easily."
