I watched things like DB and Pokemon growing up, of course. The first thing that really got me interested in the genre, though, knowing what it actually was, was manga. A friend of mine in middle school let me borrow a few of his, and it just sorta took off from there.

Sailor Moon, it was definitely SM (anime). Later I watched Cardcaptor Sakura and Digimon, but when it came to manga, the first one was SM again. And from there it all went downhill...

Though I had seen a few other anime before, what actually got me into it was Digimon.
First series/season
...and not that American dubbed shit. (I watched the, fairly accurate, German dub. I shun dub, generally, but... that's where I started)

I got totally hooked (having expected it to be shit, and just checking it out for the lulz) and found it far superior and having far greater depth of story and characters, than pretty much anything else I watched on TV, and I though "if this is what they make for kids..."

I have watched anime and read some manga since i was really young, but didn't know it was anime or manga until a decade or so ago.

I don't remember what got me interested in anime/manga at the beginning, but i am pretty sure it was because of video games, i probably was searching things about a video game i was playing and ended up finding about anime/manga related to that video game.

Anime wasn't really that hard to get into where I come from. What with the reruns of locally dubbed versions of DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Voltes V, etc. Then there were the cable channels with english subbed and dubbed ones. I watched a lot of them when I was young but never really cared for what anime as a medium was then (I doubt any kid really did, they were there and so I watched them).

Watching Rurouni Kenshin (esp the Kyoto Arc) changed my passive interest into a more active one. I remember it being really different, it wasn't focused on trying to sell toys, didn't shy away from the violence, themes my little child brain was trying to understand, theme songs that were good and didn't sound cheesy, and some references to historical people and events. I don't really watch anime as much now that I've transitioned into manga, but I'll always remember that show and how much I loved it.

Oddly enough, I got into manga through playing a Naruto game in my GBA. At the time I didn't know anything about it but I liked it so much that I looked up into it's "lore" and somehow it ended up introducing me to the medium that is manga.

Here's my story: I was a kid, I discovered the internet, and with it, porn. My first video was 'One: True Stories'. It was tragic, more than that: depressing, like really emo. Perfect for a teenager. I was hooked. I wanted to see more. And here I am, though I dropped those genres years ago.

I was one of those kids who woke up early every Saturday and couldn't wait to get home on the weekdays to watch Pokemon, Digimon, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Shaman King, but I had no idea that was anime. It wasn't until middle school when I saw friends reading shoujo manga and when Naruto was really huge, that I found out what anime and manga was.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure manga got me in the fandom first since I was, and still am, a voracious reader, though I have no idea what that manga was; my memory of it is a deluge of CLAMP stuff, plus shoujo stuff, plus random shounen the library had. I definitely remember what really got me into anime though: The Visions of Escaflowne and Mushi-shi.

My friend introduced me to manga in high school, but fandom came years later.

I don't know which one I did first. those series above ignited my passion in anime/manga fandom. I think it was the manga: Love Hina, after that was the LN: To Aru Majutsu no Index (tamni already has 20-ish volume at that time). reading tamni took me months to catch up to the latest volume, and around a year after that that I took interest in other series. I think.

of course it all started with the usual: One Piece, Shaman King, Rave Master, Pokemon, etc. those anime aired in my country when I was a kid. but those did not make me want to read/watch other manga/anime.

For me it was anime then someone mentioned the manga was further ahead so I checked that out then I heard there was a light novel so I checked that out, then I heard of web novels. When VR stories get better and cheaper I'll be in that too [ VR games = VR stories].
