The DANMEI Project is a newly formed translation group and is currently recruiting anyone and everyone who is experienced with scanlation and is passionate about Chinese BL manhua.
All projects acquired by DANMEI have been, or will be, granted permission by their respective creator/s. This means that the author has trusted DANMEI to accurately interpret the intention of their art, and, for this reason, accurate translations of the meaning and tone of the story and characters are of paramount importance.
What we do is for free, but this doesn’t mean quality should be neglected; do realise that online manhua authors do not charge readers for their hard work. Therefore, needless to say, DANMEI is committed to producing quality work and all members must be experienced in their position.
The DANMEI Project is recruiting:
•Chinese to English translators – you must have a high command in both languages, especially in English. Critical knowledge of Chinese cultural norms and phrases (slangs, idioms, catchphrases, wordplays) are absolutely necessary. Your translations represent the soul of the character and the integrity of the story, not to mention the author.
•Experienced typesetters – you must be experienced and have your own library of fonts. The fonts and format you choose will influence the tone of the characters’ voice and the atmosphere of the scene. The ability to clean and redraw is highly, highly regarded.
•Cleaners (colour) – some authors may provide a clean copy of the manhua so will only need to clean SFX and redraw simple backgrounds. However, on occasions for which a clean copy of the manhua is unavailable, a cleaner will need to clean all text as per usual. Cleaners must also be experienced with redrawing.
Expressions of interests:
•Proof-readers, QC*, Editors – in addition to an exceptional attention to detail, you must have an in-depth knowledge of the Chinese language and cultural references as well as native fluency of English. You need to be able to detect any mistakes or flaws in the work and make suggestions on how to correct or improve them. There will be more information about these roles later. However, you will know what is required if you are experienced.

Remember to state your handle (name for which you are credited) and the task (cleaner, translator, typesetter, and so on). Not compulsory, but feel free to provide a description of your responsibilities or if you did anything outside your role to improve the manhua. Short descriptions or dot points are fine—I like dot points.
NEWBIES (currently unavailable)
Newbies are welcome to apply! If you do not have a lot of experience but are quite familiar with typesetting and cleaning, please do apply. However, you must be prepared to redo the work if it’s sent back. Don’t worry, notes will be added to explain what corrections are needed and why. You’ll get the hang of it eventually

There are many interesting Chinese BL (danmei) manhua; however, not many have been translated for the English audience. DANMEI Project aims to change this–one manhua at a time, one chapter at a time. The only reason holding us back is the lack of manpower; we don’t want to take on more than we can chew, and we want to do the author and the manhua justice by not hastily rushing the project. It’s not about the amount of projects we complete but the quality and accuracy so the story can be enjoyed by fans around the world. JOIN US!!
