ive heard not to start with series like naruto/generic fighting series. apparently you'll only really learn how to say "I'll kill you" 100 different ways

edit: also here's a youtube guy, got a little cast about learning japanese here

I wouldn't necessarily call naruto or bleach easy. They have all those fighting terms that you'll never use in real life. Naruto also does not not talk like a normal person.

First of all, how knowledgeable are you in Japanese? If you're an absolute beginner, I doubt you'd be able to read any manga at all. There are a lot of words there that you wouldn't find in the dictionary. I'd just suggest children's books. If you already have previous knowledge though, read on.

If you want to learn japanese from manga i'd suggest some generic shoujo titles: Love Berrish, Full House Kiss, and Parfait Tic. They're all extremely easy (Though there are some exceptions, like Special A. I've translated a chapter of that. It isn't so simple). Look up some manga that takes place in a school, that has no fighting, and that concentrates on personal relationships. Those are the easiest, and also the most useful in terms of vocabulary you'll learn.I've always thought Parfait Tic is the best because it has all the inflections and idioms that people actually use in real life. I also used W Juliet, although those theater terms won't really help you. XD You should see some of my earlier manga...they're all ridden with notes in pencil. bigrazz

Thanks for the suggestions Razrill. I am not very good at Japaneses right now, even though i have taken classes and used to be able to read kana, but I have gotten rusty. But this is one way for me to refresh myself. So I don't care much about the genre, but I do want something that is entertaining. And ultimately, I want something that is also in English, so that I can cheat when i get lazy, but that's pretty much unavoidable.
