One Piece has really gotten on my nerves lately. I didn't know there were such a fanatic, dedicated fanbase for it. I mean... GOda. If it's one manga today that's truely overated, it's OP. biggrin cool

Oh, and Friut Basket.

I agree about Viewfinder, which is implausible and offensive (random, repeated rapes by a stranger leading to "love"). I do think that Totally Captivated is fairly good, although I'm not crazy about it; at least it attempts to have a story rather than just sex. Vampire Knight is not bad for a vampire romance -- it is better than Twilight -- even though the story just does not interest me. Kuroshitsuji, I initially dropped after reading two chapters, but a friend egged me on to keep reading, and then I started to love it around chapter 10. I read it for the art and the comedy, and I'm not a Sebastian x Ciel fangirl.

To me, the most overrated series is Skip Beat!. It is an entertaining read, but also contrived and soap-opera-ish. I don't think that it deserves the title of "the best."

I recently read Onani Master Kurosawa and I think it has one of the most ridiculous story I've ever read. I really can't understand how it became so popular.

Finally, someone shares my opinion. Seems like it's going to be in the best seinen poll. laugh So the taste of this website on best seinen is just like this. But I can totally understand why some guys like it and why it attracts attention.

Yeah, I posted it because I saw how many people consider it one of the best five seinen ever.
I consider myself an open-minded guy and I can bear with the "weird" theme of the manga. What it's unbearable to me is that the manga tries to give you a sort of "realistic" feeling (like this could be a real story) while all its characters are extremely ridiculous and
Spoiler (highlight to view)
there is no redemption at all because he's not sorry for what he did, he's sorry because he hurt an innocent (the girl he liked), but not because he realized what he did was wrong. And his afro friend who sticks for him after what he did to his girlfriend? What kind of damaged human being are you? Also come on, how a girl can fell in love with a guy who jerked off on her uniform... (and the worse part is that she was the character I felt more realistic till that point)

I keep imaging him telling their children on the couch "and this is the story of How I Met Your Mother, my sons" like in the famous TF and their children with these faces: eek eek

Character development has been lost on you guys.

Not a masterpiece, to be sure. Only thing you're right at.

QFT.

It's actually fairly realistic in terms of character development. As outlandish as the premise is, it's ultimately a coming of age story, and if you can suspend the initial disbelief of the situation (which is a stretch, I think we can admit) the progression that follows is thoroughly logical.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
He wasn't accepted, but the point wasn't the apology anyway- his actual emotions in that regard don't matter. The story was trying to present the fact that he was willing to come to terms with himself and how society views him, even if it made him an outcast.

Also, it's good to remember that this is basically a Japanese kid acting out a repressed fantasy, likely one that the author himself possessed but never actually acted upon. That part of the premise is culturally excusable, I think, considering it's fiction that was originally a doujinshi.

Also, reid, "mystery" is spelled incorrectly in your sig, just so you know.

Exactly what I think. But what I don't like is that it never really seriously criticizes or talks about the respression and the cause in any manner, and as reid1 pointed out, gives no redemption and realization. As you know, the premise of the author itself is way too questionable. I can understand why it's liked by some people. But best seinen? Come on...

Oh, I'm not arguing that it's a masterpiece- I quoted Doc primarily for that reason. But it's pretty far from "worst out there," as it's actually relatively intelligent for what it is.

I disagree with the redemption and realization discussion though- that did happen, but it was on a very personal and selfish level. The author was clearly trying to show that those types of desires should be accepted, and thus they were in the world of fiction. As I said earlier, the actual character development that I respect is the individual's willingness to be open about it at the initial costs- you have to admit, if you had simply stopped reading at a point where he was still ostracized all of those complaints would actually disappear.

It doesn't discuss the repression because, well, it wasn't repressed here. It was basically a hypothetical with that premise- and an idealistic one at that.

I won't get into the schoolkids issue because my explanations here would be entirely cultural, and having not been through the Japanese school system I don't feel I have the right to make that claim based upon educated conjecture.

Bleach. It's simply ridiculous. The start was mediocre and from there on it just got worse. I'm all for the "shonen" style in a manga but there has to be a limit. It's become a parody of the genre more than anything else.
Shaman King, same thing.

I read Hana Kimi a while ago, people telling me it was great. That was a big disappointment. The story had nothing new at all... but I could have accepted that had the characters been fun or interesting. They weren't. I could care for them at all. And the comedy didn't appeal to me either. I didn't laugh once as I did in Power!! or Lovely Complex.

I would also mention Air Gear, but everyone already knows it does in fact suck. x)

Even assuming your points are valid, I still can't like a manga where all the characters started as detestable and ended as detestable (I can't sympathize with none of them). As already said I don't have problems with the jerking off stuff, what I've problem is the final resolution of the story.

Putting that aside, I can't agree with you saying that
Spoiler (highlight to view)
he's not accepted. He's completely accepted by his afro friend, even if he traumatized his girlfriend. He's accepted by the guy who run the 4x100 naked (sorry don't remember the name) because he said that he didn't do anything to him or to her girlfriend (so for that logic he could be friend with Hitler, because Hitler didn't do anything to him or to his girlfriend, I know it's an exaggeration but I suppose this can explain what I wanted to mean). He's forgiven by the girl he liked, he's forgiven by the girl he starts to like later (if you find a normal character development that... well I've to disagree).
In the last chapter, he's totally accepted back in the society.
And imho he's not sorry at all to have used the girl in his fantasy to objects to jerk off.

You said that the character development is realistic, so if you were the afro guy/the other guy/one of the girls, would you have acted the same way? I certainly not.

Quote from Crenshinibon
The author was clearly trying to show that those types of desires should be accepted, and thus they were in the world of fiction.

I could have agreed if his fantasy were remained fantasy.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
But when he actually acted under the direction of the hikikomori girl this isn't anymore valid imho

I'll stop here to avoid going OT, anyway these are just my opinions.
And as you said there are pretty clever points in the story, it's just that it has the most irritating character development and "message" for me.

Thanks for the heads up, maybe I'll change if I find the time.

To be back in topic, I strongly dislike three of the five shoujo which are in the poll, so I suppose I'm a voice outside of the chorus in general. biggrin
