So I was talking to my friend today, and I was making analogies to certain manga genres~

So I think Shoujo (mostly) is just fluff~ like cotton candy: sweet, light, and fun

the darker/angsty shoujo (eg being Kaori Yuki during our convo) is like rock candy: sweet but hard, so hard that it can be painful~not to mention that its also sometimes weirdly shaped... ---> oddly fantastical stories...

And well Seinen is (generally) like dark chocolate: bittersweet romances, sometimes dark stories, certain things (psychological/violence) that may keep you up at night~like the caffeine in chocolate might do~
(not to mention that dark chocolate is usually liked by generally more mature audiences ^^)

And Josei (this one's a little tough for me)... josei~ is like some really fancy store bought candy... with nutritional information... has a lot of variety, delicious to some (not so much to others)... with a whole bunch of reality... candy may be sweet but most of all its just empty calories..
but sometimes you're lucky enough to find a few with some actual substance (something worth looking at again and again) good enough to keep you hooked

And Shounen is like bubble gum -_-'... comes in lots of colors, tastes great at first... sometimes/some kinds... loose their flavour...
but sometimes, its great... you chew on and on and you never get tired of it
other times, its awful.. you chew on and on... but there's already no flavour left...

~y'know what i mean?

lol i'd go on.. but i'm more interested in what you all think =]

(btw, the other stuffs...>_>; let's just call them "forbidden fruits", if you catch my drift)

~ahhh notice that all the above is candy~ empty calories, guilty pleasures, and well simple joys of life xD... i love manga...

cynical/parodying/slife of life....
hmm true enough.. didn't think about that aspect of seinen....

(attempts to twist the words to my liking)

yaa~ dark chocolate... that can be like cynical.. after all cynical people are bitter and dark chocolate is bitter~ ^^'

uhh parodying? uh well dark chocolate is chocolate... but real dark chocolate is nothing like the mass produced chocolates they sell... made of the same stuff... so ya.. (has not explained anything)

slife of life? uhhh uhhh everyday stuff right? like everyday i'd like some slices of dark chocolate~ (ahahahaha ^^')

~ fails miserably

Wasn't there a thing about how eating a small amount of dark chocolate every day is good for you? (This is honestly just floating around in the back of my head, I have no factual basis for this statement other than thinking I heard it somewhere).

Excellent. Now I have an excuse to reread a Lucky Star strip every day. And eat some chocolate.

The only chococornet I've ever had was filled with a milk chocolate paste that was really artificial tasting. I can't say I'd want to eat one every day, as entertaining as Konata is.

azumanga daioh and lucky star (i completely forgot those are seinen)

but anyways i have a good explanation for this one =]

because when you grow up, you eat less junk food, but every now and then~ its okay to have some sweets.... especially if its~! dark chocolate....

(less enthusiastic now....)

no but really, i'm just wondering what other analogies other people have out there ^^'

I see some josei (smutty) and shonen/seinen (ecchi) as condoms that you repeatedly hit over and over again, and once it breaks you gush into yaoi, yuri, hentai and the other "forbidden fruits"

>_>;;; i wanted to avoid that topic lol

but anyways if you're gunna say it like that
i'd say that the former are like regular glazed donuts, whereas the latter are the 'gushing' cream-filled kinds

(it seems that i really like food)

LOL.

Nice analogies.

Hmm. I do have a sweet tooth so Cotton Candy is a YES for me. Dark Chocolate taste like hell and expensive candy taste like crap. Bubble Gum are heavenly except the end.

Wow, it's scary how close that is to my manga tastes.

Haha, I liked the analogies even though I dislike sweets. The shounen bubblegum one was particularly acute I thought. laugh

Wow, I'd never thought I'd relate shoujo to food. But it's actually pretty true. eyes
