Nope it's not all that. One of the few on my unfinished list. It's overrated. I read half the volumes but felt it's plot was being stretched out which made it boring. Sure, for the first 10 volumes I wouldn't complete diss it. But you do get sick of its typical and annoying crap.

I agree... I started reading Fruit Basket because of its high rating. I stopped at volume 9, because it's repetitive, corny, boring and childish. Coming from an older reader, I think this series is suitable for pre-teens or children. It's not something teenagers or grown ups should read. I don't mean to offend any fans. This is just my opinion. Sorry...

I don't say it's all that, but it's definitly good.
It's not so repetitive, so maybe it's packed it to much sweetness, and stuff you might not like. Nobody makes you read it. I think Naruto and Claymore are pieces of junk, so I don't read them.
I just think they are boring.
Fruits basket is not overrated (in my point of view).
But whatever, I guess you can say whatever you want, but really...
I'm really fond of it, and as much as I don't like everything shoujo-ish, I find it really nice and sweet, and NOT too corny.

I started reading this manga about eight years ago. Only a couple volumes had been scanlated, but I was obsessed. Around the same time, I was also reading stuff like Prince of Tennis, Hunter x Hunter, Hikaru no Go, and Tokyo Crazy Paradise; FB was my first male harem manga. It's most every girl's dream to be liked/wanted by everyone, so I, a sixth grader back then, couldn't help but be hooked. Interesting story and beautiful characters, what more could I ask for?
As time went on (and scanlations slowed) however, I lost my enthusiasm for the series. I didn't mind that every character had extremely bitter memories, but their stories would drag on and on until Tohru somehow interrupts the flashbacks and makes everything a little better. Though I still, to this day, love Tohru's character, FB is too much of a fluff read for me (even/especially with all the depressing side stories). I have to lump this series in the same category as that of Kodocha, Kare Kano, Full Moon wo Sagashite, Otona ni Nuts, and Tokyo Mew Mew -- good for amateur readers. Tokyo Crazy Paradise and Hana Yori Dango, in my opinion, are truly "all that" and make far better shoujo than FB does.
And unfortunately for me, when I read the last volumes of FB, the ending was so terrible I couldn't stand it.
Edit: In response to the previous post, I can understand why Naruto might be boring, but Claymore too? I never read the manga, but I saw the anime and thought it was great. I read mostly shoujo and even thought Claymore was "sweet" in a manly way.

I dont think Frutis basket is overated at all!
In fact, this manga made me feel so much emotions.
I dont remember recalling a manga that made me laugh and cry so much and so often.
Its been a while since i read it,but its still on my mind.
Compared to other manga i probably already forgot by now.
So yeah, this is a piece i'll never forget.

I think that Fruits Basket is a good introduction into the manga world. It's actually sort of iconic now, like Death Note and Bleach. I, for one, have no problem with fangirls who say that it's the best evar! because it's usually one of the first shoujo that one reads. There's always that "first love" feeling about the manga that got you hooked.
It isn't all that.
I found it quite boring,
but I guess it's like drinking
cider before moving to whiskey.

And "iconic" would be overrating these manga. I like Bleach but is not done and "iconic" might not be able to be applied to any manga or anime yet, except Astroboy, or stuff that is at least 10 years old.

Fruits Basket is a good series, no doubt about it. It's not all about the action(there will be no flying robots and no sudden magical powers that will make the main character invincible), but it's more about the psychological drama that goes on.
Sure, Tohru and maybe a few other characters are too unbelievable to be true, but that's the beauty of manga. Character can be as spazzy or insane as they want to be, but eventually(if the manga-ka's any good), the story will get to its point.
Fruits Basket, like any other manga, isn't for everyone. I'm sure there are people who hate this manga and its characters, just like people hate Naruto or Bleach or One Piece. It all comes down to what a person likes or dislikes. If you like shoujo/romance, then maybe you'll like this. But on the other hand, if you want action or a manga that isn't so long, then this probably isn't the one for you.
You can explain exactly what you like about Fruits Basket that is so wonderful a million times, but someone who has a totally different opinion just won't get it. *shrug
BTW. I totally agree with the quote of Yeran. Fruits Basket was the first anime series I'd ever watched(besides CCS), and from the beginning, I've always loved it. Even three years and something months later, I'm still a major fan of it. The anime is like a wonderful intro to the manga, so if you haven't watched it yet, you should~

Because all the people buying it don't find it boring? ;)
I admit that I found the manga more interesting early on. Around volume 9-10, Takaya-sensei begins changing her character designs and today, I don't care for the look of the characters at all. If you look at a closeup of Tohru and a closeup of Machi today, you can't tell the difference between the two. There are a lot of other characters where they look so much alike today. I find that frustrating at times, especially when Takaya-sensei is presenting her story with a mix of flashbacks and displaying two similar characters.
While the manga has become more angst-filled and a lot less fun, I still do like reading it. Then again, by this point, I have an investment in the characters that I like. ;)
