lol..well I came into this thread way late...but i;d like to input my opinion either way...
I like Furuba, I do..but I also remember being disappointed by the ending..even though after re-reading the last chapters again, I seem to have warmed up to them...
Anyway, I agree w/ what most people were saying that was wrong w/ the series...
1) Tohru was too nice...yeah maybe its that people nowadays have become callous and we don't believe in such kindness...but seriously, there were times when she was supposed to get angry, and yet, she didn't...
I think one of the scenes the really bothered me was Kyo's confession on her mother's death...If someone had told me that my mother died because they decided not to pull on her sleeve or whatever, I don't think it would matter how much I loved that person, at least for a while, i'd be angry at them, and yet Tohru was like "OK, so you could have saved her, but you didn't so don't beat yourself up over it cus i love you" Uh...that's nice and all, but I think anyone would get angry...And ( I seriously think the Kyo did not have to hug Kyoko, he just had to pull on her sleeve to save her)
2) Some of the characters were unbelievable...
examples: The Prince Yuki Fan Club....really? So Yuki was a good looking guy, but really? A fan club? Having maybe Motoko like him would be believable, but pretty much the whole female(and some males) population have a crush on him was a little over the top...
Machi...I have nothing against her, but she just didn't seem like a person that i'd meet in reality...yeah she had a rough upbringing that would mess anyones psyche, but her penchant for destruction and all that just didn't do it for me...
and there were other characters that I can't quite remember right now...
3) The relationships....I don't know about others, but the fact that almost everyone hooked up w/ relatives made me a little uncomfortable...
I mean there was
Kisa and Hiro
Shigure and Akito
Kagura liking Kyo
Hatori and Kana
Rin and Haru
Um, weren't they all like cousins/uncles/nieces/nephews?

So in summary, Furuba is a good story, but you have to take it for what it is...and some things did seem a bit off....but overall I still liked it...
P.S. was it just me, or did the drawings seems to get more careless as the series ended, like she got tired of drawing them and didn't care how they looked?

They were all of the Sohma family, but they were of distant branches from each other. Being juunishi, thus together and in the same situation, may have made them seem closer in relation than they actually were. The only ones which were directly related were Yuki and Ayame. The rest were probably 3rd or 4th (or further back) cousins, not 1st cousins.

Also, she states in one of the freetalks that she purposefully started to make the characters age, since 3 years had passed in the story. I will say that I didn't like the style toward the end as much as I did that at the beginning, but it was planned, not carelessness.

Yes, it is all that. I wouldn't say that it is the best manga ever, but it is certainly up there.

Fanclubs do exist there for the strangest reasons, you know. But to be quite honest, I found that the Yuki fanclub was more for comic relief than reality. If you didn't realize that by now...would be hard to convince you otherwise.

As Liria pointed out, they were "distant" relatives. My distant cousins have also married. "First cousins" do also marry in my culture, and although it doesn't happen as often nowadays, I don't feel grossed out at all. I don't feel the slightest bit uncomfortable. Difference of culture, I suppose.

im also a bit late in the forum, but i disagree with the idea that the later volumes go down hill and that furuba wasnt all that etc. etc. i know i havent read that much manga, and i wouldnt go as far as to say that the manga is the best in the world since no one can really argue that. its down to opinion not judgement (yes they r 2 different things)

However i am one of those ppl who love furuba and it is my favourite manga out of the ones ive read, i am constantly searching for another manga that can grip me and stir up those emotions in me. It seems a little unfair to say that the characters dont develop or that tohru's healing within minutes is unrealistic or crap. the story does a brilliant job of reminding us how wonderful the world is

The morals and theories and ideas that tohru puts accross to change and help ppl really helped me too-and yes-within minutes i learnt things about myself.

so yes i think fruits basket deserves every bit of "all THAT" that it gets...maybe more.

(ps if there are any similar/better mangas please feel free to msg me a list because i would love to read them!)

PS!

takaya had to go to hospital because she had problems with her hand-she recovered but she did admit and apologise that her writing and drawings were never as good as they were. so it werent laziness or lack of care, her hand was just a bit dodgy.

just adding-you thought the fan club characters were unrealistic?? i knew girls at school like that.......so did you think that 13 ppl turning into various animals when hugged was completely realistic and normal??

I really enjoyed Fruits Basket. It was a very touching and emotional manga, even for someone like me. Yes, it may be overrated at times, but there's always a reason for that, isn't there?

For example, the characters tend to be very moody at times, but its because of their sadness that I was drawn to them in the first place.

I believe the author put in a lot of thought while writing this manga. The depth behind it all is incredibly beautiful.

All those negative comments make me wanna go and read it all over again.
biggrin
And in my opinion, the ending was beautiful. T^T

It's like a fight now, between those who do and don't agree that Furuba is all that.
laugh

i'm one of those ppl that really loved fruits basket as i was reading it. there were some very annoying parts i have to admit.

first i do have to say though that the art work was EXTREMELY bad toward the end. as i was reading the story, i kept thinking, what the heck was up with the art. usually manga start off looking bad and after the artist get used to drawing and it looks better towards the end, but this series was the reverse. they looked much much better in the beginning.

another annoying part was didn't anybody else think that it was really preachy towards the ending volume. i felt like the author was lecturing/preaching every other page.

regardless of those annoying points, i thought it was a great manga still smile

I believe the mangaka had surgery on her hand at some point torward the later volumes of the story.

She was also attempting to age the characters some from the beginning to the end. (I didn't particular like the aging, but I wonder how much of that had to do with the surgery too.)

It's probably the combination of the two that bothered you, but at least one of the two was inevitable. =(

I totally agree with you, LiquidHell. I've had a friend who doesn't talk much but whenever I bring anything up about manga, she would always suggest this manga to me. She starts talking about all the characters to me and how she likes it being related to life, you know, the little drama and stuff on it. I watched the animation and that was it for me. I didn't want to read the manga.

But we all need to broaden our horizons. Yes, Fruits Basket may have been the best but it's not like you'll re-read it in the next month to come. There are a lot of stuff out there, if you don't like it, you've only wasted about...a couple of days reading it. bigrazz

As the title goes: Is Furuba really as great as everyone is raving about?

Honestly, I thought it wasn't that good. It's not that I didn't like it, I just don't think it should have received too much credit.

However, I don't think it's the best out there and there are other manga out there that are just as good.

Yeah, I agree.

It's just that I get so annoyed when my friends just go: 'Fruits Basket is soooo great! It's the best manga ever!!!' Especially when they've never really read anything else...

Anyone would think it's the best if they've only read that. laugh But if they read something else, maybe they'd think twice.

I'm not saying that FB sucks, I'm just trying to say that it isn't the best and so great as everyone says it is. And each of us have different views on it, so I can't really blame you or your friends for liking it or not.
