This week's poll was suggested by SinsI. Assuming you have the magically have the skills necessary to do scanlations (either all on your own or within a group), would you help? Would you give back to the community in this fashion?

You can submit poll ideas here
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Should we have a scanlation culture of translators being paid for their work?
Choices:
No, it's volunteer work! Labor of love or not at all - votes: 1857 (48.3%)
Yes, it's reasonable to pay them for their hard work - votes: 1989 (51.7%)
There were 3846 total votes.
The poll ended: September 30th 2017

Pretty close split down the middle, and the discussions in the thread got heated too.

Nope, just don't want to. I literally payed money to get college credit for cataloguing media. Fixing + updating MU, Wiki and so on will thus continue to be my beat. Tech kids and translators will continue to give back to the community in their own way, i got mine.
I wonder how many man-hours i put in during the last decade...

The option for "No, don't have free time" should be renamed to "Nope, just don't want to, but too ashamed to admit it" smile

I mean, you have the time to read manga and hang out on MU, right?

Already do. Granted it's nowhere near how much I used to do when I was back in school but I still do an odd clean or redraw for certain series.

I originally started to give back to the community but I also learnt a lot more about Photoshop thanks to the years of cleaning and redrawing. Now I just do it because I've been working on Freezing for years and I will see this damn manga out until it finally finishes (please Im Dal Young have mercy and end this clusterfuck of a series)

I'll probably retire after that. I don't really read manga anymore. Either that or I'll switch to a group that specifically cleans yuri series/doujins. Can never have too much yuri in the world.

Even if you don't have the skills, some groups are willing to teach their newbies. I am not active in scanlations nowadays. But when I first involved in scanlations, I was a complete noob, my motivation was giving back to community and along with that I greatly developed my ps skill. In the end, it also benefit me irl. I love scanlations eventhough it's not always sweet but I was able to meet with many good people. It's not about the leechers. It's great if they appreciate your works but the main reasons people join scanlations are for themselves and the manga they love.

I had an epiphany earlier this year where I realized that for the series I loved but were either never translated or dropped by the group working on them, I could help bring them into English.
Don't know any Japanese but that doesn't stop me from editing or looking for translators. Wish I could put in more time though.

I have suggestion for the next poll:

Quality of scanlation (for readers), how bad is it to make you stop reading.

Since anyone can scanlate as long as you have the time and know the language (or someone who does) there are increase in number of groups/one-man scanlator that releases sub-par work. I'm not talking about replacing SFX or decensor but the basic stuff like cropping, leveling, straighten up pages and basic grammar.

There are many scanlation guide out there to help "start-up" scanlator, so when I see people releasing this sub-par work it just blew my mind because it as people are forcing them to do it hence the terrible quality release.

Is it even legal to pay scanlators for their work? I would think that to get payed, you'd need to obtain the rights to the material. And thats just a pain in the ass... even as a proofreader, I don't think we should get payed.
