I was just wondering who around MU listens to indie music and if you do, what bands do you like?

although I listen to a lot of indie, my favorites are probably The Libertines, Death Cab For Cutie, Vampire Weekend, Wolf Parade, The Wombats, Kaiser Chiefs, The Bravery, Bloc Party, Maximo Park, and Of Montreal. heh, I couldn't pick just a couple. x___x

also, why do you listen to indie music? I like it because every song sounds different. with a lot of genres, some of the songs just start to sound the same after a while, but with a lot of indie, that's not the case.

Indie isn't a genre, per se, but a status. Indie just means distributed by an Independent label.

DCFC isn't Indie anymore, but it's still great. Their last album was a bit lack luster, though.

I like a lot of indie bands. The Black Keys, The Von Bondies, The Subways, Franz Ferdinand, The Arctic Monkeys, The Clicks, Mofro, are a few.

I like independent labels because they are more likely to put out quality music as opposed to major labels putting out pure processed shit.

Indie stuff is all I listen to pretty much. A few indie bands I like are The Hold Steady, The Bright Eyes, The Decemberists (technically signed to a major label), The National, Okkervil River, Shearwater, Great Lakes Myth Society, Dr. Dog, Frog Eyes, Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, Vampire Weekend, Tokyo Police Club, The Mountain Goats, The Shins, Frightened Rabbit, Arctic Monkeys, MGMT, and more that I could possibly want to list.

I listen to Indie just because the artist know what they are doing and are not just turning out crap in accordance with trends.

Independent label, huh?!?.... Then I've got shelves of independently distributed vinyls. Do those count?

Actually, I've got lots of stuff not distributed by labels, but by the very artists/producers themselves....there's a whole convoy of them every summer in Ibiza distributing their music. We call them White Labels, but I dunno what the general term is.

I thought that Indie kinda just became a genre... I can't really name any artists, but enjoy listening to it on online radios. Actually, does Vienna Teng count?

Label(s) Virt, Rounder
Both are labels are independent so yeah she is is indie. Though I dislike it indie has more become a music genre as opposed to anti-commercial/mainstream attitude that it began as. no

Stuff that isn't distributed by a label is just from an unsigned artist, so that's what their status would be.

My favorite Indie label has to be Fat Possum Records. North Mississippi Allstars, The Black Keys, Dax Riggs, R.L. Burnside. They are full of awesome. eyes

Seems that record label had a big part in film Black Snake Moan, 3 of those artists have songs featured in the film, and then 2-3 songs Samuel L. Jackson sings are written by R.L Burnside. The main character is based heavily off Burnside... a foul mouthed, Mississippi bluesman bigrazz

And there are more than three artists on the Soundtrack signed to Fat Possum.

The Black Keys.
Jesse Mae Hemphill
R.L. Burnside
North Mississippi Allstars

Indie this, Indie that. The word's become like a cheap prostitute, with tons of different meanings and connotations. I personally prefer to always sneer at it.

Just started getting into the Indie scene. My friend's have been listening to it for years now. The good thing about Indie music is that they aren't pressured into following a specific formula when writing music. Now, because of this, you'll hear Indie music which is great, but you will also hear some stuff that just pierces your eardrums. I like Yeasayer, Beirut, Islands, and The Black Keys. I guess with mroe time, I'll broaden my Indie variety.
