Ok I wanna know what you guys think, clearly fma took a new direction in the anime and movie from the manga. Now I wanna know what you guys prefer...
Myself personally I love and prefer the manga! Its intelligent full of twists and shocking moments, don't get the wrong idea, im not saying the anime and movie are bad, but not as good as the manga, Hiromu Arakawa's real work. Also the tons of amazing and interesting characters and plots in the manga that aren;t found in the anime make it so much better.... smile
so what about you guys?

I find the manga very hurried and the characters are much etched out in the anime coz of the voices, the horror is like horror and the humour is funny in the anime...couldn't get myself to read much of the manga as somehow it wasn't as dramatized as it should have been..

I thought the anime was much better. Both are excellent, but I found the characters to be more strongly developed in the anime, in addition to the changes in the plotline that gave the story a bit more depth. To me, it doesn't really matter whether or not it's the author's original work- I liked the way the anime presented things better.

When I said Hiromu Arakawa's original work I meant more so her original idea, she basically shaped out the main story... the anime guys did do a good job in interpreting it their way, I just think the authors original intent has more depth to it, like its her's, she truly knows the direction the series should take kinda deal.

Yeah, you see, to me it doesn't actually matter what the original intention or the "real" story is when it comes to adaptations. I genuinely enjoyed the anime more, and since ultimately both are forms of entertainment, I feel that the direction taken by the director and screenwriter is superior. The original ownership has no bearings on that decision. Of course, that's entirely subjective, but regardless it should come down to what you enjoy more- the author's original intent doesn't necessarily add depth or anything because it's the author's original choice.

Overall I like the manga better. I like some aspects of the anime, such as the origins of the homunculi and Al's and Ed's involvement with the philosopher's stone, but honestly the last few episodes and the movie just ruined the series for me (essentially everything about what lies beyond the gate). As for the manga, I like the bigger scheme of things (involving an entire nation rather than a couple of warring cultures), the involvement of Hohenheim in the story, and the feel of the story (such as all the conspiracies within the government and the business about the gate among other things).

I like the manga better too. The anime was good, but the pacing and the content of the last episodes were weird, in my opinion. And well, basically what true_grave_unit said.

'Twas a no brainer for me. Definitely, the manga > the anime.

The beginning of both were about the same...so there's not much to talk about there, but the later half...
I seriously find the story in the anime kinda rushed and too...simple. It's far more complex and awesome in the manga. Plus, the ending to the anime (conqueror of shambala) was just......well, it pissed me off mad

I prefer the manga. But I think the only reason why is because I like the play on characters from the anime. It’s kinda like you get a better understanding of the characters in a warped kinda way. Did that make sense? confused

Barring a monumental failure in the ending for the manga, I'm going with the manga. I like the way things are going in the manga, as opposed to how the story ended in the anime. Personally, I like the main villain in the manga (Father) over the one in the anime (Dante). Dante was pretty interesting with her connection to Hohenheim, but I love the story behind Father and how he manipulated Hohenheim into creating a Philosopher's Stone. And he just seems like a better villain in that he is pretty much pure evil, whereas Dante was more along the lines of evil, but only because Hohenheim left her.

Also, I like how they used Greed in the manga as opposed to the anime. In the manga, he is a great character that can contribute to the future of the story. In the anime, I thought he had potential, but was killed too early. I mean, it almost felt like his story was incomplete in the anime. I like that they are using him to his full potential in the manga. The same goes for Scar. I mean, in his case, they developed his character well in both the anime and the manga, but I slightly prefer his role in the manga over the anime.

And this is a very minor detail, but I like Ed and Winry's relationship in the manga over the anime. I was sad at the end of the FMA movie when they pretty much became separated for eternity because I felt that there was no closure and no real development in their relationship. In the manga, although the story is ongoing, there is already more depth in their relationship than there was in the anime.

There are a lot of other minor things that I can talk about if I go back and analyze both the anime and the manga from the beginning, but that'll make this post even longer, and nobody wants that.

The manga is obviously way better. But I have to admit that the anime and the movie are also awesome because they have a different feeling from the manga and can stand on their own as a completely different story.
