Gweilo is a derogatory term for 'foreigner.' From Cantonese. Gweipo's the female equivalent. If you're a tourist or an expat from a western country, you have an extremely high potential of filling this role. Generally arrogant even if they don't realize it, refusing to conform to cultural norms(as in, 'for some reason, I do not have to conform to your standards. You must make the utmost effort to accomodate me because I am me'), feeling 'entitled' to something, etc. etc.

Basically, they really suck. Don't be one, which is harder than you might think.

I'm not sure why, but I felt compelled to join just to post in this topic...
I'm in the US and I really like it here, especially the south east. I'm not 100% sure why I like the south east so much. But I find the accents charming and wish I had a stronger one (my mom's from Washington state, therefore my accent is lacking, lol) I hate the stigma that people with southern accents are all morons. And I love to fight it.

In this country, even the poor are overweight. The tap water is just as clean, if not better (or the same) as bottled water in 99% of the country. There are tons of issues that I don't agree with and I am allowed to voice my opinion.

I would REALLY love it if our next president was someone I could stand to even listen to. The last two have made my skin crawl with their horrid oration skills (accents aside). I would also love real attention paid to the homeless because the vast majority of them are homeless due to mental illness.

Well...in some ways..thats a myth. Singapore isn't like the Truman Show you know...so as long as you don't chew gum or spit gum on the floor, you're not in trouble

lol, the town where The Truman Show was filmed is real. I used to think it never rained there, until I worked there over a couple of summers. Seaside, FL. Although, there is no law, I don't believe I've ever seen gum stuck to anything.

Okay, that's the end of my long-winded first post, (I could go on and on though)

eh... your previous comment then was a bit fuc*ed up. immersing yourself into a culture usually requires one to conform to their standards and not ones own. you should watch your ignorant spouts when categorizing people you don't know, it's quite unsightly.

back on topic, i gotta say i appreciate America. Only place i went to out of the states was Cancun in Mexico. the tourist section wasn't that bad but the actual city itself was kind of saddening. I think a lot of US citizens take for granted everyday norms

What are you talking about? Are you under the impression I was referring to you specifically?

I wasn't categorizing YOU. I don't even know how you could get that impression.

Also, as to experiencing any other country...don't be a fucking stupid gweilo, and I say go ahead. Otherwise, gtfo. Colonialism and westernization has killed enough cultures, no need to drive in the point by being a total fucking toad.

you inlcuded this at the end of your post.
right after my post.

could have fooled me. Also, that "i say go ahead" is no consolation. Especially with the negative tone.

Oh, true enough.

I was more referring to 'visiting a country for a while for X reason' in general, tho.

Yes. I got my bill of rights and I get to exercise it but I think day by day I'm loosing my love for my country. I getting more apathy for it now.

Things that make me sad about my country:

Patriot act is violating my right.

AT&T is violating my right too and they're a monopoly that FCC didn't exactly stop.

The internet is apparently not a dumpster but a series of tubes.

I have to choose between evil and less evil people to run my country.

My country does not see that Marijuana is profitable (a cash crop) nor does it see that it can help ill people.

hey look apparently I can jail someone without trail and jury in a place call guatanamo.

I can apparently fire buncha judges and then destroy evidences and use a bad situation to launch a war against a country just to liberate them by bombing the fuck out of them.

Guns law are going down the hole. There's a crisis here man. NRA got congress by the balls. Ok that's great you can arm yourself but there are many idiots that does not deserve the right to have a gun ok? There are law against those idiots but people with a clean rap sheet can buy 14 guns and sell them to inscrupilous people. They're trafficing guns to gangs and people that aren't suppose to have guns and lil'o Bush is making it illegal for the fed to share information to other law enforcement on gun dealers that are doing these horrible stuff. Heck the DC sniper bought a gun from a gun store that reported that it "lost" the bush master rifle when it sold it to that douche bag anyway. There are hand guns that have a time to crime of 12 months meaning from the time that hand gun is bought to 12 months from now some idiot will use it to commit a crime between those time on average.

hey man I don't want to take away right from anyone not getting guns or whatever but you HAVE to admit there ARE stupid people that does not deserve one. Heck I don't want one because I KNOW I'm careless.

OH yeah , the homelance security whatever crap and CIA have the worst computer database security ever. Heck man we [USA, MIT] invented the RSA here and we won't use it. I guess I'm ranting but it's just frustrating. Like... HELLO, use LINUX and stop having the Chinese doing Operation Titan RAIN on your ass please. I myself can personally get pay a fraction of whatever the government is paying the dude in charge of security and I CAN DO a better job than him.

But you know what for all of these crap I think my country USA is PRETTY DAMN GREAT. I can voice my opinion there are no big brother and new speak telling mean war is peace or stuff. I think the one that can top USA is Neatherland, Sweden, or Canada. They got some great civil liberty and they actually protect it and the government isn't as corrupt or shrew as USA. There are a lot of mixes alot of different type of girls to enjoy bigrazz just wonderful and arguably one of the last remaining super power = ] .

Oh, yeah, drug laws are friggin' stupid.

Look at the alcohol prohibition of the 20's or so. Drug prohibition created a lot of the drug problems prevalent today. Ironic, isn't it?

I love my country. I don't exactly love everything about it. There is a number of things I wish could change. But no matter what, I think it's our duty to love our country. It's like your mother. She might not be the best one arround. She might not be able to cook that well, and she might be suffering from depression. But she is still your mother. So you would still love her. At least I do.

As a German, i think that it is obvious why no one should love their country as a duty.

Anybody willing to say otherwise is up for a fight with me, the light weight forum poster master of anti nationalism. ( growl )

Well, at least i can treat my children like shit and still expect them to love me.

EDIT: Tanith, do you take your nic from the 40k warhammer universe?

I said the duty is to love the country, I never said anything about invading neighbouring countries to show your love to your country.
I mean defending my country from invaders? sure. But entering a war I don't believe in? Hell no! (And I don't believe in any war)

And my nick is not from warhammer. Warhammer probably had the same inspiration source that I had. Meaning Phoenician mythology.

I'm with you. I love the USA. I dunno if I would want to live anywhere else ('cept maybe Australia, I really like Australia). But I hate a lot of the people here. I really hate the current Government too. I can't say I support much of the War on (T)errorism. I'm not a fan of Central banking either. As a country, our founding fathers had the right ideals and desires to make a great free state, but lately, most of out rights have been chipped away in the name of terror and consumerism. Let me re-state: I love my country, not my govenment or the people who voted it in.

Yay America!

Hey the internet is not a dump truck stop filling the tubes downloading movies off the internets. From Senator Ted Stevens talking about the Net Neutrality Bill. "I just the other day got internet was sent by my staff at 10 o clock in the morning on friday i got it yesterday. Why! because it got tangled up with all these things that are going on the internet commericaly and here we have this one situtation where anonymous enities want to use the internet for there purpose to save money for doing what they are doing now they use fed ex they use the dilivery services they use the mail they they they deliever in other ways but they want to deliever fast amounts of information over the internet and again the internet is not something you just dump something on its not a big truck its a series of tubes and if you dont understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled when you put your message in it gets in line its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous of material"

Thats right you are delaying teds internet being sent by filling his tubes downloading all these material over the internets. whats wrong with you people. biggrin

Well part of the problem is the public is not informed very well. thanks partly to the fairness doctrine being taken out then fox news coming up shortly after. Sadly lots of people are just getting there news from 24/7 media sources and they have been getting worse by the day.
