I once survived off water and a single pop tart(not a pack of two) a day, so a box would last a week and a day, but I can't remember how much a box costs. I might have even gone a couple days with just half a pop tart.

anyway, here i can buy noodles (3mins to get ready) for 0.30 €, or a semi-instant soup (really good indeed) for 0.60€

Now that it's the Holiday Season, look for some pine trees. The inner bark of the tree can be eaten raw or pounded into a cheap flour. Some trees can provide pine nuts and young pine combs can be used for soup in desperate situations. Failing that, needles can be used for pine needle tea.

Be sure it is an edible pine, though and not something like a cedar or a yew. Otherwise you might be inviting a vomit filled death after chewing on delicious alkaloids.

Go to one of those grocery stores where they sell things in huge quantities, and buy one of those big 30 lb burlap bags of rice, and also buy a whole bunch of beans. For breakfast, buy a big bag of oats (to make oatmeal), and if you like, a big bag of brown sugar to put in it for flavor.
For all these things, it's best to put them in plastic containers to keep out bugs.
Since you buy a lot at once, it's cheap and lasts a long time, so you can eat for cents a day this way. Oatmeal and beans and rice FOREVER!

Buy store brands:
Bread 100% Whole Wheat = $2
Jam Strawberry Seedless $2.99
Skippy Natural Peanut Butter Creamy(price comparable to store and tastes better/healthier) = $2.79

With this you have P&J sandwiches for a week.

Also apples are real cheap right now because they are in season. Buy a 3 LB BAG for $3.49 you can put the peanut butter on slices or just snack on a whole fruit.

For breakfast you can have toast and jam or butter.

For dinner start with a salad, buy on a head of lettuce Romaine $1.59/ EA and 4 Tomatoes on the Vine $.69/ EA Try to make Haluska: egg noodles $0.99 a bag One head of cabbage $1.59/ EA, and onions 2 LB BAG $1.99/ EA (makes ten servings good for the whole week)
Butter Sticks -1 LB BOX $2.99
Milk with Vitamin D = 1 GAL $3.99 To drink with breakfast.
Plus 5 cans sardines for protein $0.59 each

Total weekly food bill about $30

This is an attempt to eat healthy on a limited budget.

Also don't waste money on salt, and pepper when you can pick up a couple packs for free in any eatery. You don't really need much anyway.

You can go more extreme, but at that point I'd consult someone about some food stamps if your in such dire straits. To get some perspective $30 a week is 15% of the annual income of a $10,000 a year salary. That's the income of someone with a full time job that pays $5 an hour.

Basically you are limited to fillers and vegetables if you do not have that much money. I know this has got me through some rough patches, miso soup and a lot of rice, or bread and cheese. My friend told me his grandmother survived on a long time of cactus, beans and tortillas. You can get ramen prepackaged for like what less than a dollar each and then they are always having sales on them. I also buy a lot of potatoes because its so cheap and filling with a dash of salt and pepper and some butter...goes a long way

I'd say instant ramen is the cheapest. Also, I've heard and received some really cheap, close to expiring baked goods. Normally they would cost allot, but the store might not sell them while they're still good, so they lower the price. Growing your own vegetables is sometimes very useful, like if you have a plot of land you don't use, you can plant there, or if you have a small balcony or space that you can get sun to, you can have your very own rooftop garden.

If you absolutly have no money whatsoever, you could eat grass soup. (There is a part of your intestine devoted to digesting grasses)

grass+boiling water=fibre+nutrients

Just make sure there are no dogs around.


For something with more energy, grocery stores common have near rotten produce in the back, though it tastes a bit funny, near rotten pineapple (like the grey kind) and expired breads (<1 weeks) are fine to eat as long as you slice off whatever is obviously rotten.

Couscous, rice, and other grains.

Just go to your local health foods store (I know the concept of a health foods store sounds pricey, but it depends on what you buy) and head to the bulk bins. Get a butt-load of cheap grain of your choice, preferably less than $2 per pound. Go home and cook according to google.

I personally love couscous (the small kind, I've seen others) with spaghetti sauce. smile For every one part couscous mix two parts hot water and cover for about 5 mins. Pour spaghetti sauce on top and mix in whatever else you've got and viola, an instant yummy meal. If you want to be cheaper, my mum says it tastes good with just salt and pepper. I don't like salty foods so I wouldn't know.
