Don't see how this could end the world. Might kill off those little bags of water and stuff trundling about all across the world, but the world itself would be fine.

Quote
cannabals........

Unless there's a cannibalistic world...not seeing that. I swear I saw this old cartoon TV show with that premise though...can't remember the name.

Quote
all of them

I fail to see how all of them could each be the cause simultaneously...

Quote
aliens

Guess that's possible. Haven't seen any around though.

Quote
polution

Same as global warming.

Quote
no more water

Same as global warming. Plus unless we start a high tech project to start jettisoning it all into space, I can't see the world having "no more water".

Quote
human stupidity

If human stupidity could destroy the world, the world would be gone; there certainly isn't any shortage of it. Mind you, dangerous enough tools in the hands of idiots could do the job probably.

Quote
other

As in things like the sun growing into a red giant and burning it to a crisp, a big meteorite smashing it into tiny pieces, etc? Either of those seem more likely than the set categories

Over 50% goes to human stupidity.
We certainly think low of ourselves. Completely justified, though.

It depends on what you call "world"

If you mean civilization, well, there are many possible ways, human stupidity leads to most of them.

If you mean humanity, maybe comets, I don't think we are capable of erradicanting humanity by ourselves.

If you mean Earth(the planet), maybe the Sun can do it.

This is from T.S. Elliot's "Hollow Men", right? I remember having to read this for my literature course not too long ago.

The way I think the world will end: the earth will probably be struck by an astroid, the moon will get too far away from the earth resulting in extreme climate changes as a result of which nothing will be able to live, or if we manage to escape that long enough, the earth will we swallowed up by our expanding sun when it is nearing the end of its life, by which point all life will have ceased to be because of the intense heat. Fortunately, we will all be long dead by the time the world ends.

You spelt pollution wrong, and cannibal. Not to be mean, but just so you know. I was spelling February wrong for years before anyone thought to tell me. lol.

Multiple options for global warming and it's associated problems, but none for antibiotic resistant infections? That's got my vote anyway, which I guess could be Human stupidity for going OTT on the medicine, but then again, infections have always been the biggest killer of any species.

I can't see the planet being destroyed by anything other than the collapse of the solar system due to the death of the sun, (or the beginning of the death of the sun I suppose), or a black hole eventually sucking us in. Not even a meteorite would destroy the planet entirely. Once upon a time the Earth and the moon were the same size and they crashed into each other, the result being Earth circled by a smaller satallite we call the moon. So it would have to be an asteroid bigger than Earth to destroy the whole planet, which isn't really feasible.

I guess advanced Death Star type technology could do it, but it does beg the question of why?

Unfortunately, humans have a tendency to avoid serious issues by shifting the focus on another problem, which is usually:
A)Small and not that serious
or
B)Imaginary
Plus the fact that the older set (with some exceptions) likes to think we're the ones with major issues when they're the actual cause of it 70-90% of the time. none We're basically going to die because humans have the gift of blissful ignorance. A gift! laugh

If we're correcting spelling/grammar, that should be "its".

No, but depending on its size or where it strikes it could trigger a series of events that would make the planet inhospitable to life. I suppose it could trigger extreme seismic and volcanic activity. If a particularly large volcano erupted, or many smaller ones, the gases released could be poisonous to many forms of life, or ash clouds and such could affect the atmosphere such that the sun's rays are blocked and the planet cools significantly. Or if it were particularly large and landed in the ocean, it could cause significant tsunamis and raise sea levels by a great deal. If a meteor supposedly caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, I'm sure it could cause the extinction of humans too.

Although I suppose it all depends on your interpretation of "world's end". The total destruction of Earth, or the end of humanity?

And a significantly large meteorite would knock the earth out of its regular orbit, which would cause climate changes that could make life impossible for some life-forms that managed to survive all nasty things you just described. And in my opinion, the chance that humans will be amongst the survivors is nihil.

It's not a proven fact that "dinosaurs" went extinct because of a meteorite (true, some (species) would have, but not the world-wide population)... In fact, there's even living proof that some species survived and there are many theories about dinosaurs evolving into other species.

While it's highly unlikely (or at least I like to think so) that a meteorite could "knock earth out of it's orbit" by such a margin it couldn't naturally recover, a collision with the moon is a real possibility (by then the human race would probably have already left the planet or went extinct by it's own means)... Wouldn't take much imagination what would happen if the moon "came down".
A meteorite with sufficient enough a mass to cause lasting damage to the Earth is possible, though we would know if one was on a collision course with Earth years in advance... And it's quite possible we would already notice the effects before it's even in the vicinity (gravity).

What could happen, and though also not very likely it's a real possibility and wouldn't require an exceptionally large meteorite, is for a meteorite to strike an (in)active volcano and make it go off with VEI-8 (supervolcanic).... Or it could occur naturally (scary though).
This would make a large part of the Earth inhabitable and would "poison" the rest for some time.... Not sure if this could possibly make the Earth totally inhabitable for humans (probably not), but it would kill most of us, and quite possibly to a degree we would not soon recover from (if we had the chance - i.e. new dominant species, think Neanderthal vs. Homo sapien).

Either way, nothing we can do about it (except flee).
Not sure what would happen if Sol and a black hole would cross paths... Would we even notice (with time "slowing down")?.

PS:
As I see it, the world could only end in four possible ways:
1. Collision
2. Torn apart by gravity (Black Hole or 3.)
3. Burned clean by the sun (will be a Red Nova in about 5 billion years) and later sucked up by it.
4. Human interference (would not be surprised if humanity will invent a "planet destroyer" in the future).

Yes! Yes it is smile

I think humanity will be wiped out by human stupidity, eventually the only thing we'll be able to consume is emptiness.
As for the Earth itself? Well, whenever the sun gets around to becoming a red giant (it is big enough, right?) and going supernova, it'll eventually become a black hole and no one and nothing can stop the black hole from sucking the earth up like a blob of tapioca in a boba smoothie.
Is it possible that a black hole just... transports things to another part of the multiverse? Or am I thinking of a worm hole?

Some believe that when a person dies, they are reincarnated into another living creature. dead Interesting, but damn, there are some memories I want to keep. Oh, well, a format does not sound that bad. eyes
