Quote from pikku
I don't feel like reading 16 pages, so I'll just put whatever I hate the most:

-- Smart (but they don't seem to act it), annoying guys.

They're usually perfect in everything, with girls squealing over them.
They're single fault is they're jerks, or really cold...
Or, maybe, they're a, "bad-boy." But, in the end, they're all soft and squishy inside. I mean, what?

Also the male lead is usually a beauty. Usually, meaning there are some that aren't. But he's never, ever ugly.
The personalities are not very much like actual guys, either.

So what? You want them to be ugly or just average looking? That's why everyone on TV shows and movies are so average and ordinary looking. [Turn on sarcasm meter] It's not about being shallow, it's just the (pardon the pun) ugly truth. People like reading/watching stuff with attractive people.

Quote from pikku
-- Drama.

Can't they just have a peaceful relationship? Ever? At all?
Some types of drama are okay.
I just can't stand stupid or random drama.

If you don't get it, here are examples:

Stupid- Love triangles.

Random- It's a totally normal shoujo manga (stupid drama may of may not have been in this up to this point)...
But then suddenly we find out that someone has a dark past and are put in danger because of it.
It could be passed off as a plot twist, but it's really weird after five volumes to have it spring out at you with absolutely nothing to even slightly hint the fact it's there.
Most of the time, it's overdone, too.

What? If there's no drama, then what else is there to read about? The drama is what keeps it interesting. Most of the biggest dead periods for any TV show or manga is when the couple is actually together and HAPPY. Just keep track of any thread for an ongoing series like NANA, Koukou Debut, or OHSHC. When the couples are fine and happy, little to no activity on any of those threads. Break out a dramatic chapter, and boom the thread is instantly revived and kicking.

I've already said this in this thread, but love triangles are probably my favorite cliche. You can be really creative with a love triangle (i.e. NANA) or it can be done really badly (i.e. Happy Hustle High). It creates conflict, drama, and if done right, it reveals a great deal about the people's characters.

Quote from pikku
-- Endings.

After all that drama, they're suddenly happy. Awww, how sweet... I don't buy it.

That's it. Really. I'm done with my list-of-annoyances-turned-rant.

Depending on what shoujo you're talking about and what happened in that particular shoujo, I think happy endings for the most part make sense. Think about it this way, it's the experiences that two people go through together that make them stronger. If they can survive one catastrophe after another, and still manage to be together, then they will be the better for it.

and we all love happy endings really other wise what was the point of the manga? the point of manga is to sort of escape reality (in most cases) and we do no matter how unlikely the possibility want to believe in happy endings and want out lead characters to have it!
I love the drama of manga its the best bit!

Bingo, let's look at it practically, how would we, as readers, feel if we just finished a 20 volume series only to have things end badly? Not to mention that said 20 volume series probably ran for a good number of years in Japan with a dedicated fanbase intact.

I don't mind something other than a happily ever after scenario as long as it makes sense in the long run. For example Paradise Kiss, in a lot of people's eyes, did not have a happy ending, but I thought it was a very fitting end. The last part of it made sense to me and it was very true to the spirit of the story.

And like maya said, I love the drama XD

cliche i hate.. How the main guy (usually misunderstood, evil, but sexy male main character with a hidden good side) continues to have his way with the simpering heroine, despite her yelling "No! No! Please..No!" ... geez.. if you REALLY don't want to be there that much.. .. kick the boy where it hurts and point and laugh (or run like hell.. whichever makes you happy).

oh i know! it's get really annoying if she wants him to stop she should kick him there xD it would make the manga funier at least but how about a manga where the stupid unemployed powerless annoying male lead end up with the perfect pretty smart female lead i mean once in a while it's cute but it's so over used!

This one is going to sound totally random, but I'm actually really annoyed with stories where the heroine falls in love with a dead person. Ex. Full Moon wo Sagashite, Kamisama no Iutoori, and I'm pretty sure there are others, but I can't think of them at the moment.
I've seen it a lot in non-manga books as well, and the whole premise seems overdone and ridiculous to me. Don't fall in love with dead people, girls! It's simply not worth it! roll eyes

I hate it when the girl chooses the new rebellious bad boy in her life over the kind and caring boy who was always there for her.

And something just bothers me when a dim-witted, whiny, clumsy crybaby lands the most popular guy in school...

The kind where fangirls defend their idol's "honor" by attacking the heroine who hangs out with said idol a little too "much".

It happens way too often.

What's even worse is when she goes "oh wait I think I'm enjoying this. Maybe this is his way of showing me how much he loves me and I think I love him back." It's so annoying cause they're practically being raped (and it's usually when they first meet) but I guess it's all ok in shoujo-land as long as he's good looking.

Really? Do they? I've only seen it once and I think it was because the strawberry was supposed to represent someone dimwitted or something like that

I so agree. It's almost to the point of it being extremely scary. I understand a little jealousy but these girls go all out. Plus, it's pretty annoying.

I think it comes from slang having to do with being lovey dovey (or perverted or something of that sort), but I can't remember the specifics of the translators note or were it came from.

What's worse are the idiot girls who take this nonsense and cry somewhere. I've seen maybe a handful of mangas where the victim tells the fangirls to take a hike (and I can't remember any-would love a rec-where she tells 'em to shove off 'cause the guy's her's.)

Uh, that's the typical shounen/seinen romantic comedy. Though both genders tend to come off a 'lil better in those comedies, maybe 'cause the guy is expected to step up and become worthy of the girl in a way shoujo heroines never are?

I just ran into such a blatent dues ex machina the other day, that I'm thoroughly sick of random car crashes just when everything is going well. Just once, I want a random car crash right when everything else is going horrible, 'cause really the world likes to pile tragedies on top of tragedies. This random car crash also came with the "pity relationship that breaks up true lovers" which should be banned just for it's horribleness.

worst shoujo cliches:
1)the girl falls+ the guy cathes her => the girl falls for him
2)every time the girl thinks about the guy she gets in a dangerous situation and the guy comes out of nowhere and rescues her
3)the girl cries untill the guy fells bad and comes to support her
4)the guy has a problem with his brother, but the girl always solves it for him
5)even if the guy it's a dirt bag when he smiles the girl comes to the conclusion that he actually it's a nice guy (as if)
6)the guy it's the introverted type but he opens up to the main girl, but that's because she is usually very pushy (well i kinda like this clishe once in a while, but only in oneshots)
7)after all the problems are solved the guy/girl disappears for about one year after that they finally get together forever.
8)the crybabies heroines that gets the bad boy of the school, really makes me wonder if those guys just can't handle stronger girls, so they chose the ones they know they can control
9)I'm not sure if it's a cliche, but I hate the evil mother thing the most, maybe because mine it's very nice (♥chu♥wink
I wanted to list 10, but if i think more about this cliches i might go crazy

There is always a 'most popular guy in school' who notices the heroine (somehow),

there never was a most popular guy in our school, so I find it really hard to grasp.

Oh and how the girl gets bullied and taken to the rooftop by his fan club and told to stay away from him.

You couldn't go onto the rooftop in my school. Again, no fanclubs either...

Makes it harder to visualise

my idea of the worst shoujo cliche:

when the guy grabs the random chick he just met
and says to his friends/people who are picking on her:
"she's my girl"

makes me barf dead
