Hello Everyone,

I would love to help out a group with their projects; however, I am uncertain whether I am qualified. I do not want to bother scanlation groups with my questions, so if someone on here could help I would be very thankful. 🙂

I did take three years of Mandarin Chinese; even so I am unable to read enough characters to be able to translate anything of substance. This leaves translating out of the question.

I love editing! I do own Photoshop; however I have never used it before. Am I right in assuming this is the program most scanlation groups use for typesetting and cleaning?

I have been told that some scanlation groups have applicants take a test. What is usually on the tests, and/or how do they work?

You should probably look through a couple of guides before you move on.

I guess photoshop is the most common.
Though, if you love editing, what programs did you use for it?

As for tests, it depends what you're applying for.
If applying as cleaner, you'll be given a raw image (from some manga) that you will have to adjust it (clean, so to speak) to fit to the group's standards. The amount is usually a page or two.
You will most likely be provided with certain guidelines.

If applying as typesetter, you will be given an already clean page (or more) and their translation.

For translating you also get raw pages, but you have to translate them.
For proofreading, you will probably be given a translation you will have to fix.

Somebody will then check your work and tell you if you're accepted or not.

That's based on my own experience.
