Three possibility:

1) Maria could have been turned into a Vampire.

She then goes for a blood frenzy on the nearby village and kills everyone. but finally gets caught and burnt her in a stake.

(However, since it has been shown in the manga that humans that are turned into vampires don't actually become ROGUE vampire..(as in Helsing's and Flora's case) and the fact that it's almost impossible to catch a vampire.

My guess is that Maria became one of Henry's bride or probably just a slave after she was bitten. He could have manipulated her bloodthirst (for being a newborn) to kill humans in the nearby villages and sell her to the villagers which then led to her excecution at the stake...and her ashes being thrown into the river..

2) Maria is still alive...as a Vampire. (but was sealed...as ashes inside the coffin)

She was turned into a Vampire by Henry.. goes off into a blood frenzy (because she had no choice but to protect from hurting Helsing) but in the end she was burnt into ashes and was sealed into Henry's old coffin by the werewolf.

Which is why the legend about her being 'alive' still exists. and the fact that she kills people because of 'another vampire'.

..it is still unclear who BURNT Maria.. it could be the villagers or /werewolf.
(but that's the most plausible explaination so far..)


A THIRD possibility is...
Maria was HALF DEAD or DEAD at the end of the manga.

Henry did some rampage on the nearby village, went back and buried Maria back into his coffin (possibly buried her when she was half-dead..There's a scene in the manga where Henry asked the werewolve if it is possible to use HIS coffin again).


The villagers knew this was the work of a vampire, and that Maria was the likely suspect since she was missing from the monastery.

They found Maria in the undugged coffin (probably left some of his bloody trails onto her), people thought that she was the VAMPIRE who murdered the villagers. And she ended up being burnt at the stake.....(she could have been burnt alive or her dead body could have been burnt at the stake)

I like the THIRD possibility better since Helsing would have been pissed off knowing that Maria was innocent and was accused of being a vampire.
