Yuri seems to have a problem with being undertagged

a ton of yuri seems to not be tagged as yuri (including quite popular ones such as Hana Ni Arashi/Nanoha to Chidori)

this seems to mostly be a problem mostly with non-adult yuri.

also, i think the "female protagonist" tag should be applied to way more manga.

I'm trying to get into yuri as a genre, and I am also a tag fiend. I'll try to be conscious of this as I read my way through the database and tag appropriately.

Any other series you can point me toward that need tagged? Bonus points if you can link me.

There is probably someone more official who can do this, I am but a humble tag gremlin with a raging passion for metadata, but I will do what I can.

Edit: if I've found the correct manga, I see that Hana ni Arashi (KOBACHI Ruka) is tagged as Shoujo Ai rather than Yuri. If this follows the same logic as Boys' Love, I believe that would suggest it's PG-13 rather than X-Rated, so to speak. Is that incorrect for this series?

I suppose I could read it and find out for myself. Not sure if Yuri/Shoujo Ai have the same relationship as Yaoi/Shounen Ai, but it seems likely.

perhaps that is the logic of whoever tagged it originally, however https://www.mangaupdates.com/genres.html does not specify any such distinction. if that is the intent, perhaps it should be updated? other sites tend to just use "yuri" for both.

I think this is how it's categorized. The issue isn't undertagging imo, it's the fact that some people use yuri/GL interchangeably in the same manner as BL/yaoi. You can tell because there are some series on this site tagged with both BL and Yaoi, lol. As for definitions, I view them as: BL/GL is more PG-13 while yuri/yaoi implies more mature. But as you can see, that's a really loose definition, too, and I am no authority - it's just what I've gone through my manga reading days thinking.

I guess I don't really mind people using them interchangeably (having to go back and manually review everything tagged GL or BL to determine if it should be yaoi or yuri would be more time consuming than it's worth to just do two separate category searches). However, this comes back to a longstanding issue I have had with the search function and it's lack of Boolean operators ( like search for "Yuri" OR "Shoujo Ai" - if we could do this, then it wouldn't matter than people have different definitions or tag them interchangeably since you could search for them all at once).

one problem is Shoujo Ai is more broad, often also encompassing platonic relationships, which may not be what some readers are looking for.
