should i read the manga or watch the anime for ghost in the shell, neon genesis evangelion and code geass?
i generally hear that one version is superior between the two
if you have watched and read for a series basically ask yourself if i could only see one version which would it be?

Watch all of the animes. Especially for these series you're asking about.

Code Geass anime is just epic. Manga is anime based and big part of it is spinoff and side stories.
Ghost in the shell have awesome drawing, CG and atmosphere, but manga is much more mature - blood, gore, sex scenes etc., but drawing is well.. from 90th...
Neon genesis evangelion - i hate Eva, but since manga is based on the anime it's better to watch it, especially the new OVA's.

You just can't put it like this. It's like comparing books and films. Most part of anime(i think 90% or more) is manga or light novel based. But like films based on a book, something must be sacrificed dye to screen time, anime format(number of episodes), censorship and much more. Also, the worst part of anime adaptation is what if manga is not finished yet, they had to write different ending and this kill a lot of good anime. And long anime usually contain fillers (but i don't hate them too much).
On other hand, a personally knew a few ppl who watch about 200-500 title of anime, and not reading manga at all, so they dunno about real manga plot and don't bother with it. But others grow frustrated in some time with fillers, bad unlogical ending in anime, and start reading manga. Such ppl usually become "anime haters" like: "This anime adaptation sucks coz in manga..." but after some time everybody find a balanced point of view. So i think sometimes it's better to watch a anime(in ecchi f.e.) and sometimes it's better to stick with manga.

It seems that if the anime was original (direct to anime... not based on manga), it's better to stick with just the anime...

But as mentioned by @Madzai above, if an anime is based on a manga... it may be better to read the manga if you want the complete story...

Ultimately, it's a matter of preference. Some people like watching anime because of the complete picture: voice acting, action scenes, music, etc... Others like to read manga because there aren't any fillers and it's may be the original, complete work.

TL;DR -- Generally: If it's an anime original, just stick with anime. If the anime is based/adapted from manga, read the manga for the complete plot... unless people on forums who have done both can vouch if the anime adaptation is excellent. 😀

@madzai that was my conclusion from the first response i got not my opinion

i am fine with both anime and manga, but viewing the original sounds like the best idea

I agree with hobbitelf518. When there is an anime adaptation of a manga, the story usually loses some appeal. Whether it's depth, scenes being cut, character design changes, different ending(which is usually complete and utter crap) due to the manga being ongoing, and/or whatever else. Because of these reasons and more, most people stick to the manga rather than bothering to view the anime. The opposite is also true in most cases.

For the three you mentioned, I do recommend you watch the anime rather than the manga. Code Geass started as an anime and due to its popularity, it was given a manga counterpart, which doesn't compare to the anime. I've tried reading Neon Genesis but the anime was much better imo. I've never tried reading the manga for Ghost in the Shell but the movies and anime rock.

When it comes to shounen i think u should watch. Maybe i think this way because i'm a girl. Well the anime looks better when they fight
If i read shounen i think it is so chaotic draw, because to draw a fight without colour and sound lools a bit chaotical to me if u understand what i mean 😀

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The original anime has really bad animation and isn't very focused, but it is a classic and should be watched by everyone. The manga is still on going but is a lot more focused and has amazing artwork. They are both quite different so just check them both out! Also, the End of Eva movie and the rebuild films.

Ghost and the Shell: The anime movie has very little to do with the manga and is, in my opinion, bad, but the manga I think is bad too. The anime SERIES, however, has way more in common with the manga but manages to be great. Many people however, think the manga and movie are good, and with a series like this you just have to read/watch all of it; manga, movie, and both tv series.

Code Geass: Anime without a doubt.
