Quote from tactics

When I was at school, within the Uniform code there was an option for the girls on whether you wanted to wear a skirt or not.

Some girls used to like switching it around, especially in the winter when it was so cold, it was nice to wear trousers instead.

Same goes with my highschool.

For most Asia schools, it's required to wear skirts with the uniform. (Though my skirt wasn't as short as Japanese manga ones)...

I only got out of the skirt when I was in university since I got into a school with no dress code. But for other schools, skirts are still mandatory, though there were some who uses pants.

For your topic question, no not really, if they want to, then... if they don't want then don't wear, there are alternatives anyways.

Of course it's sexist, and I'm pretty sure given the choice many Japanese girls wouldn't wear skirts (perverts on the train, etc.)

At both senior high schools I teach in, all girls have to wear a skirt, pants are not allowed. They should be down to the knee as well, though I will testify that some girls wear them as short as in manga. Most girls wear shorts under their skirt, so even if a freak wind did manage to blow their skirt up, it wouldn't be the traumatic experience it is in manga. An interesting point is that the girls never sit cross-legged because of this, they always sit side-saddle or in seiza.

The teachers can wear either and many female teachers wear trousers, especially in winter.

I guess it's kinda sexist, but in my high school (11-16yr old) we were given the choice and I can remember 1 girl in the whole year (about 80 girls in total) wore trousers, the rest of us wore a skirt with shorts underneath, even in winter. It wasn't until I went to college at 16 where there was no uniform and I started to live in my jeans.

Besides, at least girls can have the choice outside of school to wear pants, boys aren't ever allowed to wear a skirt, that's also sexist.

I don't really see why it should be considered sexist. In the Asian country where I live, public schools have a very strict dress code for both girls and boys. Girls have to wear a short-sleeved dress (yes, a dress -- not a skirt and blouse; the colour depends on the school, but it's usually white) and the skirt of the dress has to be one inch below the knee, with all the proper associated underwear being compulsory. Guys have to wear long trousers once they reach middle-school age (shorts are worn up to the end of elementary), with a short-sleeved shirt properly tucked in at the waist.

Private schools are co-ed (most public school are single-gender), generally less strict, and the female students wear blouses and shorter skirts (not very short -- a couple inches above the knee at most) while the male ones are pretty much the same as public school uniforms.
There's no such thing as a school that allows casual dress here. Every school has some kind of uniform for its students.

Since we don't have a winter season, wearing trousers never becomes an absolute necessity. Still, most girls wear jeans / slacks / pants when they're out of school (because it's less restricting, I guess)

You know, thinking something is awful just makes it seem more awful. Hardly anyone over here complains about the uniforms. It has always being the norm, and since school is a place for educational purposes and not a fashion show or a singles' mixer, the strict dress code is a good thing, imo. It helps people to focus on their studies instead of on other, insignificant things like whose dress is shorter or whose legs draw the largest frequency of the male gaze 🤣

I'm speechless, how could someone get to that conclusion. You wear skirts for the following reasons:

  1. you have to
  2. you like them

I do think it's sexist to make girls wear skirts all the time; they should at least have the option to refuse.
Sometimes I want to wear a skirt in summer, but I usually wear long ones as they are more practical (you can sit like you normally do without having to worry that people can see your panties).

Sometimes in manga I see those high school girls in the middle of winter in a mini skirt, and I always wonder how she can not be freezing. They should at least be allowed to wear pants in winter; at least, I'd absolutely refuse to wear a skirt when it's minus 10 outside. Well, unless you have skirts that are narrower at the bottom and have lots of underskirts; those are probably nice and warm.

I also don't see why girls would want to wear mini skirts to school; that's basically asking for boys to peek up your skirt when you climb the stairs, you always have to shave your legs causing razor burns, you have to be careful how you sit, and your butt will stick to the chair on hot days.

Fortunately, my high school did not have uniforms and neither does my university (I don't think there are any schools left in the Netherlands that require students to wear uniforms); so, I almost always wore trousers and still do.

It is sexist why exactly? Is it also sexist that guys aren't allowed to wear skirts with their school uniform?

You're pretty sure because of perverts on the train (etc.?)? I think you've read too much manga. Have you ever given a thought to how many women wear skirts and dresses outside school?

You do realize that you're talking about manga? You even stated so yourself. I've never seen a school uniform which included mini skirts, except when someone has shortened her skirt herself. Many also wear long skirts and dresses in wintertime outside school, even some knee high skirts.

There's many here who should look up "sexism" on encyclopedia.

I hear you say "Why?" Always "Why?" You see things; and you say "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say "Why not?"

You mean like leggings/tights? I think it depends on schools' uniforms dress codes for whether or not that can be done. I don't think that's an option for Japanese schools though...
