Um... why not adapt to the new changes? even if mangaupdates reason was for solely manga at the start, things change so why not allow novels and web novels too?. You can always change the name of the site to Manganovelsupdates or something

Because they where denied by the mods. I'm only saying this because I tried to add some to the database. I'm not sure if it was the same ones that the person reported but the ones I reported had a manga/anime adaptation of it. If I remember correctly one of the ones that I tried to add was The Sacred Blacksmith. I asked why (politely) so that I would not update the database incorrectly. The reason was that no one had translated any of the chapters. Therefore I took that into consideration when it came to updating the database.
I'm not sure if I would have added any of the ones that the person added but it did stop me from trying to add more LN with manga/anime adaptations.

Why not allow j-drama and live actions while they're at it? I too want the media I'm interested in in one location. I'm sure someone else will also want idol shows and even anime.

i agree, removing the already added webnovels it would be a terrible blow to us readers, the information about those novels is already in the database and we users have tried hard to have the most complete information regarding novels and almost all the site information.
Control of doujinshis is needed tough xD

Becouse it's to much of an hassle to deal with moderators to add new titles to the database, you don't allow untranslated Light Novels to be added would make it a lot easier to have releases added to the novels in a timely manner if the LNs already was in the database.

While i do get your point im sure you get mine too. Webnovels will either way sooner or later be published as regualr light novels or manga or anime, so you cannot say that they are unrelated to the site since the fame of series depends on how many reads them, if someone finds a webnovel in this site for example they will start to read it, and this will repeat thousands of times and that leads to that particual webnovel to gain enough fame to be published as a light novel or manga or possible anime too. Im sure that there are a lot of people who started reading a web novel then later buying the published one (Tate no Yuusha is a good example)

Sorry, but even though I am trying to be neutral on this subject I hate to say that is not true. On syosetu.com where TnY was published as a web novel there are 324,151 novels listed on the site. It just happens to be that the ones that people are translating are becoming light novels.

I don't see this as being relevant to the present discussion. To me, the issue is very simple -- it is about the focus of this site, which right now is somewhat half-assed.
Either the site should focus on manga and related media, as was its original intent. Or it should track fan translated releases in all East Asian media of interest to the fandom. For everyone's convenience.

But that arises the question, can machine translation garbage really count as "fan translation" and should it thus be allowed here?
I mean, other languages aren't allowed either, just English. And some extreme cases of web novels claim to "translate" it into English, but it's obvious a mess not from this world.

I don't really think the focus of the website is THAT important (even MAL, my-ANIME-list has novels AND manga. Well, actually, MU is better in this aspect than MAL, since MU is focused only on reading material). I mean, novels have been here for a long time and no one opposed until the releases began increasing. It's just a matter of filtering, in my opinion. There's no need to exclude everything. Unless it's a matter of too much work sorting releases, which, in that case, me, as a poor leecher, can't argue against. The admins have been doing a great job and if this thing was being done for their sake, oh well... I shouldn't even be writing this.
As to what PROzess said about the poor translation quality not being allowed... lol unless there's someone in charge of evaluating the english of the releases, that's not even a question to ponder.

But then again, the problem about the quality of the translation is part of manga too. I don't think this is the point, the moderators of this site aren't proofreaders. I've found many manga with awful translation as well, even the most popular ones (FMA is a good example). I still don't see the problem with just filtering the type of work.

I think what PROzess is trying to say is that it is easy to just run a web novel through a machine translator that doesn't make any sense and call it a translation unlike manga, LN, Manhua etc. Which need to be translated manually.
