You know what? I gave more thought about the point you raised... And I realized that even if the proposed policy was applied the same loophole would still exist. Because of Sangokushi, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms can be added to the database. Vagabond is based on Yoshikawa Eiji's Musashi; should we therefore add it to the database? And I'm sure there are more examples.

The more I think about it, the more I'm actually willing to embrace the radical proposal to remove any and all novels from the site. Sorry guys.

But why wouldn't you think a bit more and come to realization that there are other solutions? There is no need for radical changes when simple clarification can solve this issue.
We can embrace Light Novels but disallow traditional novels.

I don't even know if there are any traditional novels in the database right now, what people care and argue about here is mostly ranobe.

I actually already thought of that. 😉

The main problem I see with allowing any sub-category (light novel or not) is that you risk creating double standards. If MU were to allow all East Asian comics to be added to the database, why would it then allow only a specific category of novels? What makes this kind of novel so special that it is the only one that gets to be listed alongside comics?

I say we keep things as they are and add a better search and release system, we've been asking for years to fix them and this is the best time to do so that we search and hide things better, and if you want to say mehhhh again then heres my second suggestion.

We have baka updates and manga updates, with the recent amount of novels just make a Novelupdates sister site. Ahoupdates WILL NOT do the job, because it was a crappy 2 minute coding job not a description, info, and release archive.
Also if you do so please move our novel lists to there, one such way you could do so is to add a button in the settings area that says transfer novels to Novel-updates, from there there would be a box that says to register or login to novel updates and after doing so your lists would be copied and filtered so only novels would be removed and put onto there.

Until the user does so the novels would run through here still and then set like a 2 month deadline for us to transfer over, if we don't then a account will automatically be made with our existing username and password or if ours is for example Snow and is taken then the person who didn't transfer before the other got it would become snow1 snow2 and so on, also make the login with Email and password so that people who won't know their username can log in easily and then change their username upon login if they don't like the added number.

To be honest I like both options equally but knowing you guys you won't do either of them and will just delete things. :\

but knowing you guys Mr entitled 🙂

Though if it wont be too much work I agree with creating a clone and calling it novel-updates (NU).
Clone the site, remove everything not novel related, put up a 'we need staff' sign. Then after 1-2 months let that sister site handle itself (since seeing how many want to save novels, there should be ample amount of people volenteering to staff NU).

(And if the site is a clone any future updates to MU would easily be transferable to NU. Ofc there might be technical/security issues with that, but if it was easily doable then I dont see a reason for Novel readers to complain about such a solution).

Please don't remove the novels/webnovels and seriously consider the filter idea others have suggested. There have been a lot of novel releases recently but that is because a lot of people like them.

Limiting themselves will only slow lead to forcible ruin.

That's just your opinion, man.
I rather see the ruin in expanding too much.
It's a wiser choice to stick to the original motive and perfect it, instead of superficially try to cover everything.

So you are implying that everyone that learns a language is bound to have no life!? gg
I started with learning from a textbook at night, you know. Just allocate a bit of your free time to studying every day and it'll work out.
I'm sick of retarded excuses like "I've a job" or "There are no classes in my area".
I don't know what kind of retarded job you have, but when I come home from the average 8h shift, I got PLENTY of time to eat, relax AND study for a bit.
In the end, it's just a matter of your willpower and that's what everyone is lacking. Simply laziness, nothing more.

Well actually, novels have been around MU for a long time. It's nothing new. And it has worked so far. There are only around 700~ novels listed here and most of them are not getting updated too really. Compare that to the around 100k mangas in here and it doesn't even come close to the flood of pages you're worried about. As you said previously about the classic novels like Musashi and the like, what stops them from being added here? Well probably what has stopped it so far, because they have not been listed here so far. Not passing this policy change won't really increase the chance that they will be added in the future.

It's the release page that's clogging up and it's because of the popularity of novels right now. I mean, just look at the Series Stats. 17 of the top 20 series are novels and the other 3 are novel adaptations. I don't really see removing novels as anything but harmful to MU. And I don't see anything harmful in trying to filter content first either.

How can you say it's not harmful when 90% of a MANGA site consists of novels instead??
Seriously, all these stupid web novels flood the release page every day and all stats are getting distorted because of it. You can no longer rely on them for manga information.
And this IS supposed a manga site, so when the system doesn't work anymore, change is obviously needed.

Did you know that the Novel community is flourishing BECAUSE OF MU!.

Wrong.
It's because someone figured out how easy it is to copy/paste webnovels into google translate and call it a fan translation.

The community "killed" this site themselves. They allowed that garbage like MTL floods the release page. You reap what you sow.

Yes, obviously. Which is why people are pushing for a filter.

For LN, Instead of getting rid of everything, I have a suggestion. I assume that the problem is having to maintain everything.

Just stop the updating of chapter releases for LN. It would become more of a library rather than an updates site for LN. That's at least how I have been using this site for LN. Once you have the translator's website, you just stalk that page instead.

LN have a lot more chapters than manga, so the approach should be different.

Actually, I never knew that you could really add any kind of Asian novel here and if the policy doesn't change then I'd probably go and add a lot. Personally, there's no point in allowing novels when you're not gonna be comprehensive about it. I'm fairly sure there are others out there who may do the same when it comes to their notice too so...
