should i go with manga or anime?

the anime is afterall just an adaptation

I agree to a certain extent with the above statement. Manga, anime and live action can all be extremely entertaining, sometimes people even read and watch a series in two or even all three forms: I know a lot of people who watched Gantz, Death note, Moyashimon, Honey and Clover or GTO in anime and live action forms as well as reading the manga.

All these forms have their different strengths and weaknesses and although most anime are indeed adaptations of manga, that doesn't mean that the animes are always inferior. In fact there are many adaptations that I personally find much better than their manga equivalents (Blue exorcist, Minami-ke, natsume yuujinchou) as well as certain anime originals that are very good (Code Geass, Gundam, Evangelion, Lucky Star, Princess Tutu) or animes based off light novels that don't have or do not have very good manga adaptations (Spice and Wolf, Kemono no souja Erin, to aru majutsu no index) or games (valkyria chronicles)- you might want to consider reading the novels if you have basic fluency in Japanese. Further to that, if you are learning Japanese, anime can give support with the audio, though it will not help much on its own. Manga even if reading the originals after gaining a certain amount of fluency is probably inferior to anime or novels, as the density is lower than novels nor does it have the audio support of anime.

Of course some manga have been adapted into much inferior animes (Berserk, Claymore, Ubel blatt) so it is important to watch/read the right form for the right series. There are also many manga which do not have, or do not yet have anime adaptations, so if you want huge quantity in a particular genre, then manga can give you more (not to say that anime lacks for quantity...)

As for live action, some can even be better than the manga (Hana Kimi, Jin, Nodame Cantabile- this last one was pretty good in anime too) and then others are interesting just to see what they do with it, particularly if you like the series.

Beyond that, it is a matter of taste, some people just prefer the visual/audio aspect of anime/live action or dislike the human actors messing up sentimental lines or not having the right CG support or perhaps they just prefer having the full story, something often cut out of anime.

Be aware that the opinions on series and which form they are best in above are my own opinions and many would disagree but I imagine most people would agree with me that it depends on what you are looking for and what series you are looking at.

One further aspect would be how much time and what environment you expect to appreciate the media in. If you just want something to relax you for 10 minutes after getting up before getting ready for you day, anime will not really be as convenient as manga as you should probably be watching through 20 minute blocks but if you are trying to do something relaxing after a hard day at school/work, perhaps watching an anime will be more passive than reading a manga. Or, again, if you want something portable and don't want to drag a laptop everywhere with you, then manga in book form are probably a good idea.

So, it is up to you, do not expect all manga to be better than anime or vice-versa. They are fairly complimentary, so try both. I hope that helps with your indecisiveness...

By the way, I believe this is in the wrong section. It doesn't seem to have much to do with Saikano....I imagine you should change it to Manga General category, if possible

This is the right section... He is specifically asking about SaiKano, not some other series. =_=;;

I have only seen the anime, and I like it very much. I'm sure you will enjoy either one of them, whichever you choose.

Oh, I see -embarrassed-. Excuse me for the misunderstanding- I had originally accessed it from the latest posts section and was inattentive- thank you for pointing that out Pikapu.

I have only read a bit of the manga but I thought both the anime and live action were good. I personally preferred the live action to the anime for its pacing, use of people and CG but the anime was also enjoyable.

The bit that I read of the manga gave a lighter feeling, the art style was quite cute so if I hadn't already seen the anime, I think I would have preferred it. (Didn't particularly want to see it a third time...)

Doesn't really answer your question and neither does the useless and massive previous post I made (I apologize) but I do recommend taking a look at the live action, if you don't dislike them, after you try the manga or anime... (hopefully you get a better reply on that point)

i actually read the first 2 chapters of the manga and didn't really enjoy it, so i was wondering whether i should continue reading or change the pace with the anime.
i didn't know there was a live-action 😮
i think i will go with the anime, since the live-action does not follow original plot

I guess I might be a bit late, but I'd say stick with the manga. The anime is a pretty good and mostly faithful adaptation, but it's missing some 'minor' things that I think are very important. It's just a few scenes portrayed differently, but the way the manga does them gives me an overall very different view of Chise's character. The ending is also different and they give distinctively different vibes there.

The anime is worth watching though - the soundtrack and everything works really well with the story - but manga first if you'd rather have Chise be a little more ... scary.

Both the manga and anime is depressing. I wont watch this series again. It's good for you if you like tragedy and depressing stories.
