I'm not sick of it persay...but it does seem to happen a lot. I'm okay with it though. It seems like Japanese are more susceptible to flus and fevers or something, like how they're always saying that you might catch a cold if you stay out too long or stay in wet clothes too long. I've never caught a cold that way...but I'm sure that's just me 😁

That wasn't some weird Chinese-word joke, was it? 😉 But I guess it wasn't like Rosie O'Donnell's one (but maybe it's close)...

Er, no it's just something I say instead of confused. I tend to write the way I talk.... I have sayings like "los crapitos", "bozshamoy" (<--bastardised Russian, forgotten spelling) and my all time favorite, "Jeannie McEntire and her three uncles!" Yeah, I'm a bit... at a loss for words ... yeah...

And Rosie O'Donell has a Chinese word-joke? I dunno, we don't get her show here, at least not on any of my channels. ^_^;

But as for the food and the 5-second rule (food hits the floor--do you eat it or not?), well, there was an article and I didn't get to read it myself but my sister said that scientists studied food that had hit the floor and they were surprised at how much bacteria could be on floor that hit the floor. 🤣

Well, I'm not dead yet 😀 I don't really take much notice of stuff like that, especially after finding out that regardless of where in your flat you keep your toothbrush, there will always be fecal matter on it. Which means everything has fecal matter on it, doesn't it? Gee, that's a nice thought gag

Oh well, if stuff like that really killed us, we'd all be sick or dying by now =P

idk....i mean.....a lot of stories use that as a pivotal moment for a love scene or something like that....it's rather handy....but i think it's kinda cute in a way..^.^

I'm okay with it, but I think I'm going to break any day now... (the same Japanese love landmarks are starting to get to my nerves too) These repeated scenes always lead to the same nowhereland conclusion. So innocent they are stagnant.

There's this group of old codgers in my state who go swimming in the near-freezing water of Lake Superior every year, they claim to have never gotten colds from it.

Agreed 😃 It's a good opportunity to develop the story. Like, for one, they get to see the other's house and stuff 🙂

@SirGir--->That's crazy 😲
I remember one day when it was pouring, like seriously pouring, my sister and I went outside and ran around in my apartment complex. We got soaked even though we had umbrellas cuz it was also pretty windy, but in the end we were fine. No flus or colds, the only thing I regretted was soaking my shoes cuz then I didn't know what to wear to school the next day 🤣

Delirium! That'd make a great twist on this tired formula! Someone tell the mangakas!

And Rosie O'Donell has a Chinese word-joke? I dunno, we don't get her show here, at least not on any of my channels. ^_^;

I think there's anywhere from 60- to 90% feeling of resentment and some anger at Rosie for the USA and Canada in-the-know (or even just barely up-to-date) about entertainment news, for various reasons though (she's put herself in hot water a lot). The "word-joke" I meant is the "joke" or comments she made about people in China that were talking about Danny DeVito and then she she made a joke by imitating the Chinese language that came off insulting.

Rosie O'Donnell hasn't had her own show for years. She only co-hosted for a few months and about a month ago she was fired or just left the show. I don't want her replacing Bob Barker and I'm not even a Price is Right addict or even much of a follower of the show. 🤣

And I think my teacher once said there was this article entitled like "living causes dying" (or it might have been actually "living causes cancer") which was probably all this over worry dying from being exposed to something. There are valid concerns out there, but I remember there was a rumour going around in elementary that these scented felts (made by Sketchers, I think?) would kill 1000 brain cells if you sniffed them. ... 😲 😳 But even then some classmates went "1000 brain cells? I don't care sniffs felt" but it wasn't the kid that ate earwax or such 😛 , but regular classmates that probably were just like the rest or in the 'accepted' group. Maybe that was just that person's way of saying "I don't believe that" or maybe just enjoy being stupid... 😳 😉 🤣

I even read in this illustrated book about a Chinese person that had come to over to Canada or the USA from China, that his father couldn't stand or didn't like to use the toilet in the house because it was too private and preferred to use public washrooms. 😐 😕

But that's all I guess I will say about these topics in this thread since my post made no mention about manga characters and fevers. 😳 But if Japanese are obsessive compulsive or hygiene freaks, I would think it probably wouldn't show up in their manga unless the mangaka wanted to prove a point or it had to do with the story. A mangaka saying to their own people "you're cleaning nuts" might not go over very well. 🤨 😔 I guess it'd be a wake-up call though. It'd be boring if it was the entire focus in a shoujo manga, but if a mangaka succeed, I'd still give it chance. shrugs

hmm a manga character with insanely high fever doing insane stuf?? actually there is such a manga in Mekakushi no Kuni

the main character had fever, and yet her senses and reflexes got better, and she got really-really strong.
strong enough to put down a fire, and lift the bf that was nurcing her and pull him into her bed.
tho she forgot about it the next day.

I think the fever thing is just a convenient device to show one character as vulnerable, and another as a caretaker - taking them out of their usual roles & showing a different side of them. But yeah, it does get a bit old after a while. 😃

Quote from Takiko

But if Japanese are obsessive compulsive or hygiene freaks...

They probably have their own hygiene quirks and I'm sure other groups have hygiene habits that seem just as weird to the Japanese, but I have seen people on Japanese variety shows eating out of the same dish & sometimes even using the same utensils - usually people who know each other pretty well, but still, that's not something I see much in the US.

First of all, it's manga which means it's fake...yes, big surprise there so don't have a heart attack and die on me here. (I may know CPR but I can't save you since I don't wanna) I guess the mangakas just and it in there to make it "cute" when the guy/girl takes care of their love interest.

pretty much, in romance mangas it's just a way to get the two characters you want to spend time together. Like somebody said earlier, I'm waiting for the series were instead of having the flu/fever, they get mono or something uber contagious.

I have to say it struck me as strange as well, I've never been so sick that I would faint and need someone to take care of me maybe the mangakas are exaggerating for the purpose of more exciting romance?

Doesn't bother me.

I hardly relate how the characters behave in manga to real life anyway. Everything they do is pretty much over the top.

I agree with tactics; manga characters have crazy lives 🤣
My vote was not bothered at all.
